A little bit of both
I was struggling during the first couple of weeks at GA. They throw so much information at you and the instruction style is so unlike anything I had ever known before. At times I was pretty miserable. But when I had been researching GA, everyone I talked to (and I do mean everyone) raved about GA. They loved it so much I was afraid I was joining a cult. So I spoke with one of my instructors. In my usual smart ass self I said to her, if every alum adores GA so much then logically either things get better as the program goes along, or people are suffering from some form of Stockholm Syndrome. She looked at me, smiled, and says: "it could be a little of both". I thought "oh boy I never thought of that. I was just trying to be funny". Yesterday was our last day of school and let me tell you she was right. It is a bit of both. My class had 28 students in it and we went through a lot together. As a result we bonded very tightly. And I am super grateful to my instructors Kara, Faz, Pete, & Anneliese (especially Faz who is such a great teacher and is super knowledgeable). I got super choked up yesterday when I thanked Alfonso (who is like the class guidance counselor). He and the instructors really helped me out when I was struggling. One of the areas I was struggling with the most was presenting. I have gotten so much better at it in a mere 10 weeks. I'm still very nervous when I have to do it, but I have improved thanks to their help. So in the end I have very fond feelings towards my UXDI6 classmates and my instructors. It has been an incredible experience. And I'm so glad I decided to do it. However, the parts where I struggled are still very vivid in my memory. So I think I would come off less sycophantic when talking to someone about taking an immersive class at General Assembly. Bottom line: it is a ton of work, a ton of information, you will feel scared and frustrated at times, you may cry (I did several times), but you will also make so many amazing friends and learn and grow so much in such a short time. It is an incredible community at GA and there are many reasons why people are so enthusiastic about it.
Not sure why Tumblr insisted on rotating the pic. But I designed a class logo for UXDI6 and made pins and stickers that I gave to my classmates and instructors.
I am really going to miss my UXDI6 classmates.
Life at General Assembly.
The scoobies.
It's nice to have a few days off for Thanksgiving, but it's going to feel strange not being with my UXDI6 classmates.
Friday night and the UXDI class is card sorting for fun.
The folks at Chief were so generous with their time. Even after we got a presentation and a tour of their beautiful office; they chatted with us individually.
Power cord octopus: a pretty typical sight in a GA classroom.
WDI6 vs UXDI6. Spoilers: UXDI6 won!
The only way to keep Faz from pacing up and down and getting you dizzy is for him to be sitting.
Project 3 retrospective. Sharing how we all thought it went and how we did.
Fun with wireframes & prototypes
Yeah, I said it: FUN! One of the things I’ve enjoyed the most about my UXDI class has been learning and messing around with various wireframing and prototyping tools. So far my favorites have been Marvel, Axure, and InVision. I like creating wireframes and then working out all the different interactions. Making stuff clickable, making pop-up windows, and stuff like that. It’s cool to test the prototypes out afterwards, too. Oh, and I forgot to mention Sketch. That is pretty sweet software too for creating higher-fidelity mockups. No wonder tons of UX designers are ditching Illustrator for Sketch.
Yesterday my project3 teammates and I took a field trip to the Air & Space Museum for a little user research. I couldn't resist taking a couple photos of the exhibits themselves.
It's so trippy to me to see Style Tiles being demo-ed in class and know that I once worked with the person that invented them.
Robert solved all 4 puzzles before anyone else. This is how we chose to spend our time after class on a Friday. Yep, we're a little geeky.
