the walk to her house was thankfully short, and thankfully not too awkward. she seemed to be avoiding having to make light conversation with him – and that, jinyoung was also thankful for, given his lack of social skills and knack for making interactions with others so painfully uncomfortable.

as they approach jennie’s house, he starts to feel a vague presence of supernatural beings but he shrugs it off at first. what are the chances of a curious girl playing around with psychics and shamanism actually living in a haunted house? besides, she blatantly ignored his previous inquiry about the condition of her house (cliché as it sounded) so he just assumed that her house was free of ghosts. however, as he stood in front of the door of her apartment, he could no longer reassure himself nor deny the fact that the odds have indeed occurred.

jinyoung’s first impression of jennie as a nice, polite girl soon went down the drain in seconds. if he wasn’t so terrified of the thought of having to actually exorcise ghosts, he would be making sure that his annoyance at her was known. the previous time, it was a low-key accusation of him being a fraud – but this time, she was downright making fun of him and he knew it.

“look, i don’t care if you think this whole thing is a sham but believe it or not, your house is actually haunted.”

jinyoung tells himself that if she continues to joke around and not take him seriously, he might just leave her there and then. maybe have the ghosts inside manifest to the point of a ghost nest and have them start attacking her. but before that, he hopes that his pale face and trembling hands provide enough proof that he isn’t lying at all.

“don’t worry, you won’t actually have to do anything, nor will you get hurt,” jinyoung reassures, noticing that the girl seems just a little bit confused. “just need some uhh, moral support?”

he takes a few deep breaths before beginning the short walk into the building, to the apartment. thinking about the ghosts was one thing, thinking about how he was probably going to be bedridden for the next week was another. put them together and they made his teeth chatter and hands tremble. he wasn’t even charging this girl? jinyoung gives himself a pat on the back.

as soon as he opens the door, he nearly blacks out from the sight of all the ghosts crammed into the apartment. it was atrocious – if they were actual human beings this would be a case of severe and illegal overcrowding. he quickly reaches out to grab the girl’s arm, just to make sure they don’t get separated (more for his sake than hers, if we were to be completely honest). jinyoung swats his other hand around as he clenches his eyes shut, refusing to look at the ghosts. thank goodness the exorcism process wasn’t that hard for him; with just a touch, he could cause the ghosts to disappear entirely. he uses his “shaman senses” to locate the ghosts around the apartment, slowly making his way through as carefully as someone without vision can, all the while holding onto the girl’s arm.

❋ exposé

jinyoung rolls his eyes, not even bothering to hide his annoyance at this point in time. she can be sarcastic and snarky now but he was going to get the revenge that he was already formulating in his head. he presses his index finger to his temple and shuts his eyes, appearing to be concentrating extremely hard. he waits for a few seconds before he opens his eyes again, a shocked expression on his face. “believe it or not, miss, but my shaman senses tell me that you will slip on a banana peel later today.” he knows it’s ridiculous, and he knows she’ll definitely not believe him, but that’s the whole point. jinyoung definitely cannot see into the future, but he can absolutely get some spirits to make it seem like he can. he fishes a name card out of his pocket and hands it to her. “if my prediction comes true, feel free to find me at this address to properly apologize to me.”

after the (irritating) stranger leaves, and after he has carried out his (fake) exorcism, jinyoung prepares to execute his plan. he finds her easily enough, having sent a spirit to keep track of her while he performed his exorcism. he stays a safe distance away from her, not wanting to get caught. when the timing seemed right, jinyoung passes the spirit who has been tailing the irritating lady (for lack of a better way of referring to her) a banana peel before shooing it away. he watches eagerly as the spirit throws the banana peel right where her next step was going to be, and covers his mouth in a desperate attempt to suppress his laughter as he watches her slip and fall. he quickly runs away, no longer able to hold his snickers in, knowing that he can expect a visitor to his office/apartment very soon.

❋ late night runs

spending the night tracking ghosts? how fun. he takes consolation in the fact that he was in a slightly more populated area than his previous assignments, so it wasn’t that scary being out by himself looking for ghosts. his client was a businessman who wanted to develop a park of some sorts in this huge piece of land right in the middle of town and decided to seek jinyoung’s help in ridding the park of any sort of supernatural presence. exorcising the ghosts themselves wasn’t hard but chasing them was. jinyoung hardly has any stamina or agility to keep up with them.

he’s kind of glad that his “shaman senses” has become even more refined over many years of doing his job. he can pinpoint the location of ghosts with more accuracy now, as opposed to just having a vague sense of which direction the ghost had gone to. when he realizes that the ghost that he had been chasing had wandered off towards the streets where there were more shops and more people, he broke out into a full-out sprint. if this ghost was like any of the other ghosts that he had encountered before, it was going to wreak havoc.

running at full-force, jinyoung fails to spot another pedestrian as he turns a corner, inevitably crashing into her rather unceremoniously. “oh my goodness – i’m so sorry, are you okay?” he speaks really quickly, wanting to make sure that the girl was fine so that he can carry on with his tracking before the ghost wanders out of his radar.

jinyoung realizes belatedly that he finds himself in this situation a lot – pacing around in front of creepy looking buildings that are most definitely haunted, no matter how much people like to refute the fact that ghosts exist. he’s definitely done exorcisms alone. many times in fact. but during those times, his clients would be outside the building while he was inside, which was not so bad. furthermore, there would be some signs of human life around the building as well. however, the building he was assigned to this time was in some remote area, standing tall and proud by itself. the nearest populated town was at least a 30 minute car ride from where he was and his clients were adamant in not tagging along. it was not like they had any reason to come with him anyway. how could he tell them that he, the (self-proclaimed) best shaman in korea, was afraid of ghosts?

at his wits’ end, jinyoung whips out his phone, quickly scrolling through his contacts. he feels bad for calling her at this hour but he knows that she will probably be the only one out of all his useless friends who would be most willing to help him out. when the dial tone ceases, he heaves a sigh of relief and quickly stutters into the phone, “h-hey, it’s me – same problem again. do you think you could come over here and accompany me while i exorcise a building?”

❋ totally haunted

his heart is pounding against his ribcage uncontrollably, and he figures he knows why, but denies it as well. the path to his destination is all in his head – he knows it like the back of his hand, he doesn’t even need to look up to see where he’s going. jinyoung supposes that it’s because he feels unnaturally drawn to that house in the first place, always finding himself headed towards there for no real reason at all. that’s right. he’s totally drawn to the house, and not the inhabitant of the house.

almost a half an hour walk from his own house, jinyoung finds himself staring at the familiar apartment complex. he briefly considers turning around and just running away but just like every other time, he finds himself stepping inside and making his way to the person he’s been wanting to see for some time now (all the time).

“hello?” he calls out as he knocks on the door, trying to hide the fact that his voice is shaking just slightly. as he waits for the door to open, he briefly runs through a list of excuses as to why he’s here. after all, his uncharacteristic persistence in getting the other male to finally accept his suggestion of an exorcism has been far from successful and he’s starting to run out of ways to persuade him.

“i’m pretty sure it was somewhere here…?” he mumbles to himself. it’s nearly 10pm and jinyoung is out in some deserted neighbourhood (what’s new?), tracking down some ghost that had gotten away during his exorcism. he groans, very tempted to just give up and go home. after all, he was tasked to exorcise the house and he did get rid of all the ghosts, just that one had escaped. so he technically completed his task, right? however, being the perfectionist he is, turning around and going home didn’t sit well with jinyoung.

counting on his senses, jinyoung navigates his way around the place. he can sense the presence of the ghost nearby and to his delight, the ghost seems to have stopped moving around. picking up the pace, he soon finds himself standing in front of a shabby looking building which he assumes is uninhabited. he can’t pick up the presence of human beings, only ghosts, and thank god his “shaman senses” tell him that the building doesn’t seem to be haunted. if not, he would definitely be on the way home right now. screw being perfect. heaving a sigh, he enters the building.

the ghost seems to have made itself comfortable deep in the basement of the building. jinyoung is trembling by now – haunted or not haunted, this building gave him the creeps and he was scared out of his wits. he’s about to go down another level via the staircase when he hears some faint voices. he starts to think that this has all gone wrong. maybe his senses weren’t that accurate after all. maybe this was some ghost nest and they had all acquired the art of hiding from shamans. maybe he was going to die here tonight and become one of them. with such thoughts running through his head, jinyoung quickly turns on his heel to dash back up the stairs. however, when he crashes into someone and nearly tumbles down, the young shaman screams rather loudly, eyes shut tightly. “i’m sorry! please don’t kill me! i won’t exorcise you, i swear!”

“yeah it’s haunted, and i’m not lying this time. remember the ghost nest i mentioned just now? yeah. your house is basically breeding one,” jinyoung says, using all of his willpower not to stutter. great. whatever happened to the easy money he was supposed to get? now he’s going to end up bedridden for at least three days after this exorcism, and he’s not getting paid at all.

honestly he has no idea what she’s going on about right now. her answer was vague and she was quite obviously trying to hide something. having absolutely no patience and time to decipher her response, he shakes his head. “forget it. you don’t have to tell me if it bothers you that much. just didn’t think someone your age would do anything that would end them up with a haunted house of this calibre.”

he figures he should probably go in to start his exorcism now but there’s something holding him back. more specifically, his fear of ghosts seems to be weighing his feet down and rooted to the ground, and he cannot, for the life of him, find a way to make himself enter the building. he knows that what he’s about to do is going to be extremely embarrassing for him but he has no other way. well, he does, but it wasn’t even an option that he was going to consider. with a sheepish grin, he turns to the girl beside him. “well, i guess i’m going in to exorcise the apartment for you now but…” he laughs awkwardly, “do you mind going in with me? i’m slightly afraid of ghosts, you see.”

jinyoung is pleasantly surprised at the girl’s manners. at first glance, she seems like a bratty high school girl with a princess attitude – the exact type of girls that jinyoung absolutely loathes and is low-key scared of. but he supposes that it isn’t good to judge a book by his cover.

“a haunted house?” he repeats. he’s kind of reluctant to take this job because it’s almost night time (the worst time in the day to carry out exorcisms) and he absolutely hates exorcisms and ghosts. he would attempt to reassure himself and tell himself that it is highly impossible that a high school girl would be living in a haunted house but yet again, his previous experience with a high school girl client tells him that he should be more wary. “are there any signs that the house is haunted? say, doors closing all of a sudden, lights flickering, odd-coloured water?”

he raises both his brows in surprise at her remark. he wants to be offended but he is also amazed at the gall she has to indirectly call him a fraud? well, he is technically a fraud but still. he doesn’t exactly like it when people tell him that ghosts don’t exist. from that, jinyoung concludes that this girl is probably here just for kicks and her house isn’t actually haunted, which makes him more inclined to take up the job.

shaking jennie’s hand, jinyoung smiles at her. “you can call me jinyoung,” he releases her hand. “now, do you want to show me the way to your house? i can exorcise it for you right now.”

telling ghosts.

it’s been nearly four hours and jinyoung is still in this sparsely populated building, chasing after a ghost in an apartment that was even smaller than his own. being someone who rarely got out to exercise, he was sweating buckets despite the frigid weather and panting hard. whenever he had to carry out exorcisms, they would usually be done in less than ten minutes. however, this ghost was seriously fast and smart, something jinyoung has never encountered before.

after ten more minutes, jinyoung collapses on the floor and drags a hand down on his face in exhaustion. a quick glance at his cheap, unbranded watch tells him that it’s way past midnight and he groans. “can you just let me exorcise you so that i can finally head home?” he pleads. yet, all he gets in response is the ghost sticking his tongue out at him, which has him getting back up on his feet to resume his task.

a few rounds around the house and jinyoung finally sees the opportunity to catch the ghost. the young shaman practically leaps across the room and grabs the ghost as he falls onto the ground. “i finally got you!” he yells a little to enthusiastically. giddy with excitement, he doesn’t notice that someone has been watching him for a few minutes now and nearly screams when he hears someone speaking. the ghost takes jinyoung’s state of shock to escape from his grasp and jinyoung feels as if he’s about to cry. whipping his head towards the source of the voice, he doesn’t know whether to yell at the stranger or try to convince him that he is not crazy.

“i’m… uhh… doing some housekeeping?” he explains himself, deciding that the ghost can wait until later.

jinyoung grits his teeth at her response and almost scoffs. her words just makes him want to mess with her even more. her insistence on how ghosts and spirits didn’t exist was borderline offensive given that a spirit killed his entirely family but he supposes it’s not her fault that she doesn’t know. still, ideas on how to scare her with his spirits runs through his mind at the speed of a freight train and he has to refrain from cackling.

he has better things to do, he figures, so he decides to simply the troublemaker and go back to the task at hand. he can save his evil plots for later. however, her challenge intrigues him. he’s more than willing to show her that ghosts do exist. but there was just one problem. even if he were to actually legitimately carry out his exorcism, it wasn’t like they could actually see the exorcism being done. so either way he would still be accused of being a fraud. racking his brain for ideas, his expression instantly lights up when he comes up with a solution. it wasn’t technically his power, but he figures he could both prove to her that ghosts do exist and humiliate her at the same time.

“well, miss, i am definitely going to carry out the exorcism but it wouldn’t convince you if you can’t even see the ghosts being exorcised in the first place am i right?” he explains. “so how about this – i’ll contact my spirits and make them predict your future. if i get the prediction right, you’ll have to apologise to me. deal?”

he’s puzzled when he wakes up and the sky is still dark - jinyoung’s usually a deep sleeper so he has no trouble sleeping till the sun rises then next morning. a quick glance at the clock tell him that it’s around 3am. then, he finally registers the incessant ringing of his phone and curses himself for not turning it to airplane mode when he was about to sleep.

looking at the caller ID, jinyoung wasn’t sure whether to laugh or cry. sure, daehyun was an easy and consistent source of money. the young shaman himself was quite bewildered that he managed to con him multiple times; that guy was a whole other level of gullible. but this was borderline ridiculous. jinyoung was about to decline the call and go back to sleep but the thought of going over at 3am in the morning and getting to charge extra fees for overtime work (and for doing nothing) was too appealing. sighing, jinyoung finally picks up. “i’ll be there in half an hour.”

jinyoung decides to walk to daehyun’s house. it’s actually a 10 minute walk from his own house but he figures he can just tell daehyun that he lives really far away and took a cab and get extra money when he asks his customer to reimburse him for the “transportation fees”.

“so what’s going on now?” he cuts straight to the point as the door swings open, revealing the other male. jinyoung is sleepy and grouchy and desperately wishes to go back to his house and bed.

jinyoung shrugs, “sure, you can pay me after.” he doesn’t really care because he usually gets the payment anyway – when ghosts aren’t involved, his customers are foolish enough to think that whatever he had done was effective. when ghosts were involved, he was effective. he was pretty sure this wouldn’t be any different.

the walk to her house was rather awkward. jinyoung felt the urge to make some conversation, but didn’t really know where to start. what do you ask a high school girl? why are you living alone? what’s your name? he cringes to himself and settles for keeping quiet for the rest of the journey. he wasn’t much of a talker anyway, and he never had much experiences socializing so he figure’s he’d leave it at that.

when the girl tells him that the building is close by, he gulps a little because he’s starting to feel a strong pulse of sinister aura nearby. he prays to every known superior power above that the apartment the girl was living in isn’t the source of the aura. then again, he assures himself, what could a high school girl have done to have incurred that much wrath from spirits? a few more paces and the aura is getting so strong that jinyoung begins to perspire despite it being a rather cold december night. a few more steps and he pinpoints the building where the source of the evil energy is radiating from. his hands and legs are trembling, and he tells himself it’s because of the cold weather. jinyoung prays and prays that the girl will walk past the building and lead him to some crappy old apartment that is just in need of some renovation. but she stops, and he feels like he’s about to pass out.

thoughts run through his mind at the speed of light. he briefly considers turning around and running away, telling the girl that she’s on her own. nevermind about the money – it’s not like she has enough to pay him for an exorcism of this level. he starts to think about how many days he would have to spend bedridden after this.

“no!” he shouts, his voice cracking a bit and he wants to shrink into the size of an ant and hopefully get stepped on. he really wants to get out of here now, but as he looks at the girl, he can’t find it in himself to leave her being haunted by all these spirits. the nest is in its early stages, only strong enough to tamper with the house. however, with time, he was pretty sure they would eventually grow strong enough to attack the girl herself.

he clears his throat before starting to speak again. “listen, your house is really haunted. i know you think i’m a fraud but i’m not kidding. this is really bad. i don’t want to demand you to pay me with money that you don’t have but you must promise to answer me -- what the fuck did you even do to get yourself into this?”

jinyoung almost sobs in despair – why can’t people just leave him alone? if the building really was haunted, he’d gladly (more like reluctantly, given his ironic fear of ghosts) exorcise it for his clients. however, the building wasn’t haunted, the clients think it’s haunted, he’s assuring the clients that he is ridding the building of all evil spirits. surely that counted as some form of service? yet, he couldn’t find it in himself to get mad whenever he was accused of being a fraud. he was technically a fraud, but it wasn’t as if he didn’t have any powers, right? but that didn’t stop his childish side from wanting to prove these non-believers wrong. they all think he’s crazy, pretending to have abilities. jinyoung was so tempted to mess with the stranger in front of him and make her regret calling him a little boy.

“now, now,” jinyoung starts, a small smile on his face masking his annoyance, “everybody has the right to believe what they want to believe but don’t you think it is rather rude to interrupt us?” he takes a glance at his clients, and notices to his dismay that their expressions have turned into one filled with doubt. great, he thinks to himself, and wonders why they would even sought help from a shaman if they were so easily swayed by the opinions of a random passerby.

jinyoung takes a deep breath, keeping himself from losing his cool. “have you even seen ghosts for yourself, miss? i don’t think you have the right to accuse me of cheating my clients just because of your own assumptions,” he says as politely as he can before turning back to the building. “now if you’ll excuse me, i have an exorcism to carry out.”

a glance at the clock tells him it’s almost time for him to knock off work. then again, he doesn’t technically even have a time to knock off work given that this entire “business” is entirely self-run and he is his own boss. nonetheless, he wouldn’t want to be handling cases in the dead of the night (especially if they were exorcism jobs).

jinyoung was about to get up and lock his front door (he usually leaves it open for convenience’s sake) when he hears a loud knock on the door. he groans because as much as he would like to tell the potential customer that he is closed for the day, he is a little desperate for money and he just can’t find it in himself to reject the job. sighing, he walks to the front door to open it. his customer is definitely not someone he was expecting to see – a young girl, probably still in high school? he doesn’t usually get such customers and when he does, they are usually just here to ask for “love charms” and whatnot. then again, the last time he thought that of his customer who was also a high school girl, he was rather unpleasantly surprised, and nearly screamed his lungs off as he exorcised her apartment. plastering a smile on his face, he greets the girl in front of him.  “hello, I’m guessing you’re here to request a job from me? how may I help you?”
