He could've shown you he worshipped you for thousands of hours, day in and day out–– tending to the scars on your calves while you slept or watering you in the Atlantic, knowing sea salt would help you heal–– But if you lack belief in your worthiness to receive such devotion, you'll fixate on the clouded moments he failed to align with higher self. You'll blame him for the weeds (of course you'll forget there are always weeds wherever mortal soles meet earth) amongst the garden he'd sown, pushing him away, abandoning a blooming harvest that could've kept you nourished for a lifetime.

If only you had let it grown. If only you'd had faith that flowers could be yours. @kingavriel

I recognized you as messiah broken beautiful wise lessons etched into your palms. you told me, with humble certainty, you had savored earth more than several times before and I believed. that is how I knew. I’ve known you all of my lives and in every epoch you have saved me by reminding me then leaving. even this ache feels familiar.

I've been looking forward to this moment since I submitted this study's proposal in 2011. Now, I'm proud to say that I WILL OFFICIALLY BE A PUBLISHED RESEARCHER AS A FIRST AUTHOR/P.I.! (The importance of the work and its relevance in the #blacklivesmatter era is a topic for a less self-serving post once it's actually out... But for now, please let me 💁🏽 and 🍾) This has been the silver lining to a difficult few weeks of coming to the realization that when you're passionate, ambitious, and unapologetically committed to living in your truth, sometimes even the people you love can't allow themselves to get close to someone that burns as bright as you do. They may even create excuses to try and make you believe that there's something wrong with you that renders them incapable of standing in your light alongside you. It won't make sense, but it's ok. Love them anyway, and let those people watch you sparkle from the sidelines once they've shown you that's where they belong. Whatever you do, don't dim your shine for anyone. Those who deserve to bask in the glow of the bad ass flame emoji that is you will enthusiastically gravitate towards it. Shout out to the village that raised this scholar and in many ways taught me the lesson above. #morningroutine: Each day I use my journal to write down my goals before I start any work. I filled up my last one and decided to finally break open the crown journal @elizabethgodley made for me. Today I'm starting a new practice of coming up with 10 original ideas each morning too. For someone who isn't good at sticking to routines, it'll be tough, but I know the payoff will be well worth the inconvenience. This inside cover is my reminder to myself (and now to all of you) that we have the potential to achieve anything we want. Go walk in the footsteps of the Giants who came before us until it's time to forge your own path. You'll know when it is time. 👑
