Self‑Portrait (oil on canvas) by Eugène Jansson, 1910. The Swedish painter Eugène Jansson (1862–1915) depicts himself here as an elegant dandy, surrounded by nude men posing at the naval bathhouse. The muscular, heroic body—shaped by ancient ideals—stood at the center of the turn‑of‑the‑century male aesthetic, an ideal pursued through physical training and sunbathing. The painting is conceived from a distinctly homoerotic perspective, created at a time when sexual acts between men were illegal. This transgressive subculture, though hidden, formed an important undercurrent in the development of the modern city.
The Siësta (oil on canvas, 1945) — A young male body surrendered to warmth and tall grass, resting among the quiet rituals of bread, tomatoes, and a humble jug. Antonin Ivanovitch Soungouroff (1894–1976) lets the afternoon breathe through the scene, turning simple repose into a moment of tender stillness.
