Brooklyn artist Edward J. Casey observed these stevedores [dockworkers] bathing in the East River on a hot summer evening after an exhausting day of work. This job’s long hard hours, along with its required dexterity and inherent dangers, meant that men of all races and ethnicities worked side by side at a time when most workplaces remained segregated.
