charles died in 1989. edwin escaped in 1989. from what edwin says when charles was dying, it can be assumed that it had not been very long since he escaped. that means that after escaping from soul-destroying torture that he suffered through for literal decades, what he decided to do with his well earned freedom, is take care of this boy he found in the attic. he knew, immediately, that charles was dying, and he stayed anyway. he risked everything for a person he had only known for moments.

as insane as charles was for picking edwin over a peaceful afterlife after only knowing him for a couple hours, edwin chose charles despite the chance he could be sent to hell after knowing him for seconds. they chose each other over everything else, and they keep choosing each other. til the end of the line.
