Is it normal to create a character that has a completely different expertise than you,

and then go into a rabbit-hole-long-year-obsession of wanting to learn about that field allegedly to "being able to portray the character in a realistic manner"

but then ending up developing a sincere curiosity for the topic to the point of this new interest actually taking a significant amount of your time and resources?
