She never flinched despite the expletive-laced tirade exploding out of you in the middle of the park, her compassionate gaze never faltering.
Her unrelenting calmness in the face of your tantrumâsomething she would ordinarily have shut down immediatelyâtook you by surprise.
But it didnât matter. All the feelings and emotions that have been bottled up over the past few months finally erupted out of you. You didnât even care about your diaper crinkling as you stomped.
By the time you ran out of steam, gasping for breath, you wait for the inevitable bullshit lecture about âbig feelingsâ and all the naughty words you used.
Yet, you donât see a trace of anger in her eyes. Quite the opposite.
All you see is understandingâas if she expected this. The unexpected reaction throws you off balance.
âS-sorry,â you mutter, trying to fill the uncomfortable silence. You look around to see how many people witnessed your meltdown.
The way she smiles at you makes it feel like sheâs peering into your soulânaked and exposed.
âHoney, I know this isnât how you saw your life going. Your whole world has been flipped upside down. Iâm so proud of you, sweetie.â
âY-youâreâŠp-proud of me?â you stammer.
âMore than you will ever know.â
Taken aback by her answer, unsure of what to say, you stare into her eyes for answers.
âE-even after I-I-I yelled at you?â
âYes, honey, even after you yelled. Donât think for a second itâs acceptable behavior, but I never expected this to be easy. Accepting youâre not an adult anymore can be a frustrating process, so grace is needed.â
You cringe at her words. Hearing it out loud always makes it worse.
âBut you do need to accept it, honey. Youâll never be an adult again. The adult privileges you once had are never coming back. Itâs time to let go of the man you used to be.â
Anger flashes in you, raging against her wordsâat the way she calmly dismisses the pain of losing everything you worked so hard for.
And a lifetime of diapers.
As if trading your independence, autonomy, and privacy for a life of dependence, supervision, and lack of control is a minor inconvenience.
âItâs not fair! What gives you the right to treat me like a baby, anyway? Itâs bullshit!â
Even now, she shows no signs of frustration. She only sighs, collecting her thoughts.
After a few moments that seemed to stretch into hours, she pats the overworked diaper drooping between your legs, carefully avoiding the large wet patch on your shorts.
âHoney, this diaper is filled to the brim with peepee. There are probably 10 tinkles in there. Not once did you tell me you needed to use the potty like we agreed. You didnât even realize it was leaking! Does that sound like an adult?â
âButâŠIâ.â
She cuts you off. âNo more buts, mister. Youâre back in diapers. Itâs okay to need an adult to help check your diaper so you donât leak all over those shorts. Babies shouldnât worry about that, anyway.â
âSo because it's taking me some time to adjust to diapers, you think Iâm a baby?â
Another long sigh.
âBaby, donât start that again. Weâve been over this. So many times. Iâm not doing this to punish or embarrass you. Iâm doing it because I love you and you need my help now. Itâs whatâs best for you.â
âIf you loved me, you wouldnât treat me like a baby just because I need diapers!â
She recoiled like you physically hit her.
âDonât you ever say that again! Of course I love you! Thatâs why Iâm doing this. For you, even when you hate me. One day youâll understand itâs for the best. I promise, baby.â
âHow is telling everyone I know Iâm back in diapers for the best? How is emailing my boss that Iâm resigning for the best? How isâŠh-howâŠâ
Your eyes fill with tears as you trail off, unable to finish your sentence. You turn away from her to hide your tears.
She pulls you into a hug, one hand wrapped around your back, the other supporting your diaper.
âOh, honey, come here. I know, baby, I know. None of this is easy, huh? You never expected to be back in diapers. I know. Mommyâs got you.â
For a moment, you fight to keep your composure. But her soothing presence overwhelms your resolve; tears fall freely down your cheeks.
She wipes them with her thumbs, eyes full of concern and love.
âLook at me, sweetie. I love you. Nothing will ever change that, you hear me? Nothing. Even if that means you need me as your Mommy instead of your wife.â
âB-but I-I-Iâm supposed toâŠto be your h-husband. I donât want a Mommy!â
âHush, baby. Thatâs not for you to decide. Not anymore. Babies like you need their Mommies as much as they need their diapers. Itâs cruel to have tasted adulthood to lose it, but we donât cry over spilled milk, do we?â
âC-canât I just be your husband in diapers? I can still be your husband, I promise!â
âNo, little one, you canât. We tried to make it work, remember? Giving you false hope that things can change is cruel. Youâre going to be in diapers for the rest of your life. This is how it has to be.â
âPlease, no! I donât want to be a baby! I-I'm not!"
âBut you are a baby. I know you didn't choose to be a babyâbabyhood chose you. Nothing can change that now. You'll learn enjoy it eventually.â
You laugh sarcastically. âYou actually think Iâll ever enjoy getting my diaper changed? Or taking naps instead of going to work? Or only watching PG movies? Or having you make every choice for me? Get real.â
She smiles. âOf course I do! Youâre still thinking like an adultâand adulthood is all the freedoms and privileges that come with it. I would never expect an actual adult to enjoy everything that comes with babyhood.â
She crinkles your diaper playfully.
âBabyhood is all about innocence, routine, and complete reliance on adults. What do babies need with independence and autonomy? They know Mommy knows best! All they want is to spend time with their Mommy, wrapped in her love and affection. Once you accept youâre back in babyhood, youâll start to enjoy the tender, intimate moments that come with itâand forget all about your lost adulthood.â
âWh-what if I donât?â
âGive it time, baby. Youâll adjust to your new life. Soon youâll forget all about your brief time as an adult. Youâll forget I was ever your wife. All about work and stress and bills. All youâll want is to play with Mommy. You wonât even think twice when I check your diaper in the middle of the park!â
âP-promise?â
She sticks out her pinky. âPinky promise, baby.â
You hesitate, but take it anyway.
âAwww, thereâs my good boy! Now, letâs go get that diaper changed, mister! Mommy wants to hear your sweet laughter when I blow raspberries on your tumtum!â
âK-kayâŠM-mommy.â It took a second to say the word. Mommy felt heavy on your tongue, yet when you said it, it feltâŠright,
As she led you back to the car, you hoped Mommy was right about everything because as the prospect of getting your diaper changed in the back of the car hardly seemed enjoyable.
But Mommy seemed so confident!
All you can do is take a deep breath and trust that Mommy knows best.
Uh-ohhh, is my hubby making a poopy in his diaper? Aw, it's ok baby. I know you can't help it, that's why I've got you in thick diapers! I don't mind changing your dirty diapers baby, well sometimes they are super stinky, but dealing with wet and poopy diapers is so much better than accidents without them.
Though, since it seems like your potty training has completely gone bye bye I wont be able to change you as often going forward. Sorry honey, but you wear the diapers, I change them. So I get to decide when you go on the changing table. You're already used to waddling around in wet diapers drooping between your legs. I'm sure you'll get used to squishing around with a mushy bum too.
I'll make sure you're never far from a diaper change though baby. I've got this diaper bag for when we go out now, isn't it adorable? And if I'm not around I'll be sure that my mom, one of my sisters, or maybe those college girls in the house down the street are with you to change your yucky used diapers.
Why the grumpy look babe? Oh! You're not done going in your diaper, so stinky! Tell you what, you go play in the living room for a bit. We both need to get used to poopy diapers. I'll make some calls and see if I can get some ladies over and give them a lesson in dirty diaper changes. Off you go stinky!
