working with kids and one of them says “you know you eat 8 spiders a night on average right?” and another goes “no no no those statistics are actually skewed by people who like eat spiders recreationally for fun and stuff” and my head snapped up like a fucking sleeper agent
“Parachute Day II” by Chelsea Corinne
i love pleasantly unpleasant sensory experiences. getting tattooed. eating a too-big dollop of wasabi and feeling like i've been kicked in the face. being outside when it is very very cold and a little kiss of frigid air slipping between my glove and coat sleeve. people say building discomfort tolerance is important because discomfort is an inevitable part of life, and that's true, but discomfort can also be a source of joy and part of what makes life worth living.
Hello friends we need to talk about this twitter account:
You might know him from a thread where he was getting wowed by free appetisers in a Mexican restaurant.
Firstly: He is doing a bit pretending to be a wandering samurai. It's a joke and his posts are all made up. This is very obvious if you actually look at his account and website:
He does purport to be Japanese but based on some of the other content he posts there's reason to believe he's British.
Which brings me to my second point: his Samurai content is interspersed with posts like this:
And this:
He is not cute or funny. Stop platforming him.
The chips and salsa thread went viral in June and his website seems to have gone live in July. This confirms what I suspected which is that said website with it's explicit disclaimers was made in response to the big viral hit.
Consequently, back when he first blew up it was potentially a bit harder to figure out that his stories are fictional. That said, the New York Times worked it out so I'm comfortable accusing outlets who ran the story describing him as a Japanese world cup tourist of legitimately terrible journalism.
Regarding some comments in the notes:
Yeah this is also the guy from the truck thread going around. That's what prompted this post and in retrospect I should have said so explicitly.
He claims he just uses AI to translate his posts from Japanese. He also says the art on his website isn't AI generated. I think he is full of shit on both counts.
I only gave a couple of examples but even on a brief look through his twitter it was apparent that he posts a LOT about UK politics to the point where he's quite patently British. He is a Restore supporter which is a party that split away from mainstream far right party Reform due to feeling they weren't right wing enough.
It might not surprise you to hear he does not seem to know shit about Japan? Both the salsa story and the truck story failed the smell test for people who are familiar with Japan. There's also a story about going to a potluck where he seemingly couldn't come up with a single Japanese dish for the character to cook??
Yeah his whole bit is racist and it is troubling that so many people took a guy badly roleplaying as a medieval samurai to be a 21st century Japanese tourist.
Intelligent alien species based on bugs but specifically those moths that don’t have mouths and only live for a week after they pupate. This species’ whole conscious life is actually in the larval phase; larvae are the ones considered people, larvae are the ones with conscious and complex brains who build society, and each instar of the larva is treated as a different phase of life. Larvae become emotionally and socially and cognitively mature without ever becoming sexually mature. When they pupate, they metamorphose into something different and strange and close to mindless, with no mouth and no digestive system, whose only instincts are to mate and then quickly die. Metamorphosis is treated, functionally, like a person’s death, and the imago phase is a kind of proto-afterlife of majestic flight and the continuation of the species. Birth and death inextricably intertwined. Sex is not something people do during their lives, it’s a thing that is done as an imago after you’ve passed on from your life but before you return to the soil in death. Resultant eggs are collected by family members to raise. I think this would be fun.
Life extension through anti-metamorphosis drugs in a struggle with "other causes" significantly impacting the overall population rate. "Conscious pupation" activists and propaganda. "pupation cocktails" that are a combo of fast-release metamorphosis hormones and time-release fertility stimulants.
Pupal murder as the highest possible crime. Myths of sapient and long-lived imago. Primarily filial relationships are with aunts and uncles in what we consider the grandparent role and cousins in the parental. Monogendered species with occult reproductive configurations (or even unknown or unset!)
There are many people who don’t share this sentiment, but I have an appreciation for when a fanfic is so separated from canon that it could’ve easily been its own original novel, and yet the author was only ever going to put that much energy into it if their favourite characters got to be there
I think there’s a difference between “the author stripped the media of everything it had to replace it with something easy” and “the author thought up a concept they really really like and are bestowing it upon the character like a medal”

So. Initially there was no plan, then there was "this turned out differently than intended but we roll with it"-plan based on said no-plan.
We have reached the stage of "what now?" today.
Decapod of the day: Coenobita scaevola | Red Sea Land Hermit Crab
"This ecosystem is so remote and specialized, that its delicate balance is held together entirely by this single extraordinary species"
"Due to poaching, habitat loss, and climate change, it is now critically endangered, and only a handful still exist in the wild"
"Thanks to breeding and captivity programs, their numbers are beginning to recover. And with it, we can see their homes starting to heal and with them, and the other animals are returning"
You know, when I've remarked that a lot of the responses to my posts feel like people are just plucking out keywords they think they recognise based on the shape of them and replying to what they imagine the post says based on that, the possibility never occurred to me that this is actually how many American schools are currently teaching kids to read.
Like, my assumption this whole time has been that when folks go "I misunderstood this post that says [thing] as saying [unrelated thing] because I mistook [word] for [completely different word that happens to start with the same letter]", that was a bit. What do you mean they're teaching kids a reading method that's tailored to produce this exact error?
Three cueing. Once you learn about it, a whole lot of very frustrating online discourse with US Americans makes so much sense 😭
For decades, schools have taught children the strategies of struggling readers, using a theory about reading that cognitive scientists have
If you were taught to read with the three cueing method, and now struggle to read fluently, you can still learn to read properly!

There is a downside to having a job that largely involves standing perfectly still and silent without distraction for multiple hours on end and I think a big one for me is confirmation that staying up too late / having an injury / getbeing stressed etc. does ABSOLUTELY make u stupid
from my strenuous research I have also observed:
An adrenaline high can make u impulsive and makes complex tasks difficult to parse
Sudden strenuous activity can trigger an anxiety attack
Your sense of smell can be sharper or weaker at certain points of your menstrual cycle
Your self-confidence can be higher or lower at certain ponts of your menstrual cycle
You can crash from an adrenaline high
Being irritatable CAN be a sign of hunger and eating WILL make u feel better
You can influence your BPM with enough practice
There us a certain point in meditation where music stops sounding like music and is unrecognizable
People can tell you're watching them if your feet are pointed in their direction
If you don't look at someone when they're talking they sometimes forget you can hear
Perfectly normal things will seem aggravating if u are already mad about something so if u don't chill it'll keep getting worse
Gen AI is nothing special I can also draw / write badly, help you with math inconsistently, answer you dubiously, and consume amounts of water you would think are physically impossible
