“Rooftop after a nightmare. Good place to clear your head if you can make it up there.” His lips curved at the memory. Not the nightmare of course that had been terrible. Meeting Laura however had been completely worth it. Not often that he just connected with someone like that.

Most people likely suffered from some sort of nightmares these days. The change in the world traumatic to all, to put it rather mildly. While the brain coped best it could, it did mean that your subconscious could give you something to really chew on at night. Not exactly the most restful of sleeping conditions, so it seemed a little counter productive. But hey he didn’t design how the human brain worked.

“She’s pretty amazing, helped me cope with it and then I don’t we just, clicked. Not everyone appreciates my sense of humor.” He felt lucky that she did.

Jemma smiled through sniffles as Peter talked about his girlfriend. He had the same kind of look on his face that Fitz always had when he looked at her. She missed that look.

“Human connection is important in times like these. Knowing people understand you and relate to you helps build powerful connections. It inspires people to rise up together. And to have that connection be love--it’s a powerful thing.”

“I’m not one for heights anymore,” Jemma confessed. “Jumping out of a plane without a parachute or powers lends itself to creating a fear of heights.”

“There’s nothing left of me, sir. Nothing good anyway,” she whispered through tears. Part of her wanted to push him away for his own protection from her. Another part of her, the selfish part, perhaps, wanted to let him comfort her. She let that part win.

“We’ve been through hell before, but as a team. I was only strong because we were a team. But out there I was alone and saw who I really was. The version of me who was on your team is still lost out there–probably gone forever–just like half our team–just like Fitz,” Jemma said, shaking and crying.

“I don’t buy that, not at all.” Phil commented, keeping a hold of her. Rubbing her back he said. “We all had to do things I don’t think any of us could honestly be proud of out there to survive. I know I did.” He said sadly, “I know things seem lost at the moment, but if you ever trusted me, trust me now.” He said sincerely. “I’ve never stirred any of my team wrong, and I’d never lie to you. But I know you’re in there. You just have to find your own way back.”

Jemma didn’t say anything for awhile. She cried into Coulson’s arms, letting him comfort her.

When she finely spoke again, it was hardly a whisper. “I’m afraid of who I’ve become. And I’m dangerous around people. Am I worth saving?”

Weirdos and Rejects

Brandon hung out at the back of the lab, where it was quieter. It was also away from other people, the sheer power mixed with the instability of his powers made it dangerous to be around large crowds. He’d either accidentally have them all knocked out, burnt or under mind control.

He only really came out his corner in the room when people needed something, was needed for an experiment or if he was on a lunch run, remaining floating idly in the air in a sitting position as he read or played with some sort of toy he’d bring to pass the time. People didn’t exactly like Brandon, but he was useful. He knew this so he stuck around which beats being outside the wall.

He was reading when a woman had approached him. Bookmarking his page and lower, he reached eye level but remained floating. It seemed odd, but ever since Brandon realised he could fly, that’s all he ever did. He recognised the woman as Jemma and he smiled. “Hey! You alright? Need something?”

“Hello,” she said hesitantly. She hadn’t interacted with him much in the past, or with many of the others around the lab, so she wasn’t sure he would help her, but one of the things she had been working on was asking for help when she needed it.

A lot of the scientists and assistants were skittish around her. She didn’t blame them, considering more than a few of them had witnessed her episodes. But Brandon always was pleasant toward her.

“Only if you’re not busy and you wouldn’t mind helping. I have some samples I could use help collecting.”

“I miss Felix. He’s back in the lab on the bus.” She sighed, long gone. One of those little things that didn’t really matter in the scheme of things, but did cause some heartache.

“It’s a combination of both. I wanted to be more hands-on myself but they wouldn’t let me, which I get, I guess. They don’t want me to do too much and cause problems.” The line between reasonably careful and overly cautious was a fine one.

“Yes,” Jemma nodded, understanding. It was interesting how many trivial things would be a great comfort in these moments now. Things as simple as a jumper or a plushie. Jemma had thought about it often-- Fitz’ old zip-up hoodie. It was old and well-worn. He had it since their Academy days, and whenever Jemma was feeling down, she found it wrapped around her, providing her comfort. Logically it didn’t make sense. It was just a piece of cotton. There were hundreds of them to be found around here, but none of them worked like Fitz’ did.

“Yes, well I’d have to agree with them,” Jemma responded. “You’re already doing so much. Even without growing a baby, I don’t know how you manage to stay on top of so many things.”

Felicia’s arm moved up to protect herself against the microscope if she was hit; thankfully she wasn’t. She took the other woman in. She looked scared and overwhelmed.

“Not my first time forcing my way into a place.” She hoped the joke would help break the tension. “Do you want someone with you when you head outside? Or need anything that I can get to help?”

The thief kept close, but didn’t touch the panicking woman. She wasn’t sure what that would do. Plus she seemed to be getting everything under control.

Jemma’s brows furrowed in confusion about the comment. Should she not be here? Jemma had not seen her around before. But, even if she didn’t belong here, Jemma was currently grateful for her presence.

“I should be fine once I get out of the lab,” she said taking another deep breath. “Honestly, getting the door open was honestly the most helpful thing you could have done.”

Jemma collected her things from the floor. Her breathing had evened out for the most part, but she was still shaking slightly. “Is there something you’re looking for? I can help you find it. Most people have already gone home.”

“Perhaps,” Isaac’s thoughts went straight to Bobbi. Why she took such an interest and choose to help him still baffled him at times. Everything about it remained true through observation and his own personal preferences. So no real reason to test it further. A part of him didn’t want to, as illogical as it might seem. He choose not to focus on that.

“Emotions are illogical. They have no grounding in facts and can cause people to react irrationally. They can cause a great deal of destruction, both self inflicted and to others.” He’d seen it time and time again. As much as he’d seen how people here could . . feed off emotions in a way that seemed positive to him Isaac couldn’t disprove his previous findings on them.

“I am still evaluating what people consider to be the ‘good’ aspects of them.”

“I’d have to disagree with emotions being illogical. They are an important part of evolution for a social species such as ours. Chemically, they are sound. Certain stimuli trigger our brains to produce and release chemicals that help us navigate social aspects and react properly to the world around us. Fear is important to survival, it triggers adrenaline, which gives us extra strength and focus to achieve tasks we wouldn’t be able to under other circumstances. But people would say fear is a negative emotion,” Jemma tried her best to explain it in a way that Isaac might be able to relate to. “In the same way, certain stimuli make us feel love, happiness, pride. These are the things that help people cling on to hope, drives them farther, encourages them to keep evolving. It gives them a reward for evolving and innovating-- to keep our species alive. Though, it’s debatable whether that’s a ‘good’ thing when we look at it objectively,”she digressed for a moment.

“But all of these are relative. The brain isn’t perfect and messes up these reactions sometimes. Or the body is ill-prepared to react to the chemical reaction. It’s not the same for everyone. And everything needs to be regulated; too much good can lead to bad. Which is where I would agree that though chemically emotions are logical, they do cause us to often behave irrationally.” She took a moment to consider his statement. She pet the dog for a moment. “I think, until you’ve personally felt the pure forms of these ‘good’ emotions it’s difficult to quantify and justify. But, from my own experience, every moment of it has been worth every rash decision I’ve made because of it. But you also have to consider good people aren’t the only ones to feel good things nor bad people bad things. Good feelings motivate good people to do one thing, but bad people often something else. Same with bad feelings in each of their hands. There are so many variables that I feel a definite, conclusive solution cannot be made.”

“Peter?” Felicia groaned as she wandered around the building. She thought they’d agreed to meet at the lab after he was done working, and it was getting difficult to find him.

The thief wandered from one dark hall to another in hopes of finding someone. Eventually, she came to a door that took a little force to get open. The room didn’t have the person she was looking for, but there was someone there.

“Hello?” She approached slowly, with just enough noise to keep from surprising anyone. “Are you alright?”

The woman didn’t look alright. Felicia hoped her presence wouldn’t make whatever she was going through worse.

As soon as Jemma heard the door forced open her fight-or-flight kicked back in at full force. She jumped up, grabbing the nearest thing to her, which happened to be an old microscope in need of repair. At least it was heavy. She could bash with it.

Once, her brain was able to process the scene in front of her, it seemed all the adrenaline left her at once. The microscope was too heavy to carry. She more dropped it back down on the shelf instead of setting it down.

Tears ran from her eyes and she suddenly felt exhausted. She still needed to focus on her breathing and now there was a stranger there too. She took a deep breath.

“Sorry,” Jemma whimpered. She took another deep breath and tried to focus. “It’s--the door wouldn’t open and--.”

‘Focus,’ she told herself in her head this time. She took another deep breath. “I thought I was locked in,” she said, with a little more control. “Thanks.”

“Well I’m pretty sure I’ve seen at least one chess aficionado playing himself. So there may be a challenge there if you want to give it a try.” It wasn’t that he disliked chess himself, just that his brain rarely wanted to slow down long enough for most people not to get annoyed. Or for him not to be annoyed by the slower pace of it.

“There are survivors still out there. You found us, I’m sure he will too.” Whatever reassurance he could give her Peter wanted to. They both knew the facts but at the same time had to feed the ever flickering flame of hope. As long as it burned it gave people a reason to keep going.

“What’s your favorite memory of him.” He gave her a quick grin. “At least favorite memory you would feel comfortable sharing with me.”

“I’ll have to look into that,” Jemma smiled. “I’d love a real challenge.”

“He’s the smartest person I know and I’m a genius,” Jemma said. “He has to be out there surviving somehow. Knowing him, he’s out there looking for me right now. Once he’s set his mind to something, he’s unstoppable. He’ll find me. He has to.” This hope that she was clinging to was the only thing keeping her fighting. It wasn’t for her. It was for Fitz.

Jemma wiped away the tears and immediately thought of her favorite memory. She let out a small laugh. “I’m really close to my family, always was. So, my first birthday I had to spend away from mum and dad was really hard for me. Of course, Fitz thought it was his responsibility to cheer me up. He threw me this over the top Dr. Who birthday party. It had everything: the Holo-table was set up to show 3D re-imagings of my favorite episodes, a Tardis photobooth, an amazing cake-- everything. It was a complete surprise too. Well, I get there, they surprise me, and he’s nowhere to be found, but there’s too many people to go look for him. Well, about 15 minutes later, he rolls in dressed in this fully-functioning Dalek costume he engineered himself. He had been late because one of the light bulbs had gone out and he wanted everything to be perfect.” As she told the story, Jemma was simultaneously laughing and crying. The memory lifted her mood, but telling it without him there almost made it feel like a wake. “I wish I had realized then how mad for him I was,” she said barely above a whisper.

“How did you meet your girlfriend,” she asked. She didn’t want to linger on heavy emotions too long. They became more difficult to keep control of.

Unlikely Friends

It had been a long day at the lab, but Jemma knew she wouldn’t be able to sleep until she finally put the labs she was working on to rest. So, as everyone headed home for the night, she stayed just a bit longer to quadruple-check her slides. There had been some odd findings in them, so she just had to be sure. She still wasn’t too keen about being alone; it was something she was trying to work through. But as long as she kept her mind occupied, it was okay for awhile.

It had only taken an additional half hour to finish and clean up. Gathering her things, she turned out the lights and attempted to walk out the door. However, the door wouldn’t budge. She tried again but it still wouldn’t budge. She instantly felt the panic surge through her--her fight or flight instincts kicking in. Her breathing became shallow as her heart and mind raced.

She had enough experience with her episodes now, she could recognize them right away. She closed her eyes, slid down to a crouch on the floor, and tried to focus her breathing.

“You’re fine,” she tried to tell herself audibly. “They are all your friends here. Nothing bad is going to happen. You just need to breathe.”

The therapist had her practicing calming herself down by reciting the periodic table in between breaths. She took a deep breath in and on the exhale began, “Hydrogen.” Another deep breath, “Helium.”

Jemma had been making progress but it didn’t hurt to check on her. Pepper knew her science types and their brains could get so focused on their work to the exclusion of all else. Plus she liked the doctor’s stubborn spirit. It reminded her of working with Tony, who she missed dearly.

Time for her break so might as well see if she could talk Jemma into sharing it with her. With a smile she opened up the door and knocked on the door frame to the lab Jemma worked on. “Hey I need a break and was going to go pick out a new book, want to go with me?”

Jemma had been getting frustrated by the labs she had been running. They kept turning up with contradictory results and she felt herself getting worked up. She took a deep breath and tried to think of the best course of action. She decided the having tea and looking over some notes that had been passed to her would be most beneficial. She had drank through two cups and almost finished a pastry when she heard a knock on the door.

She smiled at Pepper standing in the doorway. Jemma felt ashamed of the way she had treated the woman when she was at her worst and still felt like she owed her numerous apologies and thank yous. Pepper had really helped her get started on her healing process.

Jemma hummed, popping the last bite in her mouth. “Sure, I could really use a break from these disastrous results,” she laughed.

“Yeah I get that. I need more active stuff to calm down my brain.” Peter shrugged and grinned. “I used to do some parkour in the city. We don’t exactly have a good set up for that here. Plus I’m usually far too busy these days.” His too do list just kept getting longer, no matter how much he checked off it.

“To be honest a part of me thrives on being busy so I don’t mind so much. I’m using my brain to help people.” Instead of his powers. Either way it amounted to the same thing. Doing the most possible good that he could. “My girlfriend helps me slow down though. Easy to do it for her.” Spending time with Laura a whole different order but same effect. Slowed down his brain and body.

“I think they are doing some game nights. You can always drop in to one of those. New people are doing that all the time so you won’t be the only one. If you like chess or checkers there are a few around that prefer that.” Though one of the most infamous chess players here intimidated a few.

“I would like to see that,” Jemma said with a smile. She was not so great with athletics either. She was dexterous in her work, but not athletic by any means. “But yes, busying my mind calms me down more than clearing it.”

“Yes, I understand that. My-my Fitz was the same way,” her voice faltered as she spoke. Boyfriend seemed to portray too little of what they were. She tried to hold herself together, reaching for the water again. “But we’re still looking for him. This is the longest we’ve been apart since we were sixteen.”

“I’m really glad you have someone there for you. I’ve found it makes a huge difference.”

Glad to be away from the topic again, she rubbed her eyes and responded. “I do like chess. Haven’t found a partner in years though, people don’t like constantly losing,” she tried for another smile.

“After you gave me that plush representation of DNA for SHIELD Secret Santa, I’m pretty sure you’ll figure out something for it,” Bobbi laughed. She was sure the search for an item such as that would have presented a number of absurd and cartoonish creations.

Jemma laughed. “Felix the Double Helix was made with you in mind, I’m sure of it!”

“So, how has preparing for the baby gone so far? Do you have everything ready to go? Are Clint and Steve building everything or have you been able to scavenge things? Do they me to look after their muscles as they work,” Jemma joked.

Isaac cocked his head curious. “They already committed a crime as I understand it. They performed experiments that would have been classified as torture. They followed no ethical board. They created life, and considered them nothing more than property to do with as they wished. Nor did they believe they should be put under any judgement.” He didn’t understand precisely why it should be an ethical struggle.

He reached down to stroke Beaker’s head around his ears. “I did not talk this much. Before.” Isaac didn’t know how to expound upon it.

“I guess our situations differ on that account, then,” Jemma replied softly. She did not think Isaac was wrong in his decision. What she said had been in response to the decisions she had made. “I was judge, jury, executioner for the sake of my own survival. No one else’s. And the worst of it was until that point I had been helping them, once again for my own survival. So in the end, am I not just as guilty?”

Jemma smiled at him. “It’s easier once you find people who actually understand you, or at least try to because they care about you, isn’t it?”

Jemma began to tear up again. The longing she felt for Fitz was so deep she could hardly breathe when the waves came. No one would ever understand her the way he did. People used to joke they were one person and she’d pretend to be annoyed at it, but being without him so long, she really did feel like a huge part of herself was missing.

“Is it really my decision to make whether my life is more valuable than the person I’m up against? Or if I’m really on the right side of the fight?” Jemma hesitated. More than anything she was looking for a distraction from what they had been discussing. Some of it hit too close to topics that could make her spiral into another episode. She was trying to avoid those. But if he needed a break, then maybe she could handle it with a conversation change.

“Alright, a small break can’t hurt, I suppose. But then we should talk about something more casual. For example, I still haven’t discovered what people do to relax around here.”

“It’s more about what you do after that matters. Its about getting back up again, and finding a way to do the right thing.” In the end that is what Peter found really matters. Not giving up. No matter what happened as long as you kept trying there would be a chance to make things right.

Probably a good idea if Jemma panicked again it would just undo all the good of relaxing. May make whatever she tried to keep down back up again. Peter’s MO was distraction by running at the mouth, he might as well use it now.

“Relaxing?” Peter pretended to rub his chin in thought. “Well there are plenty of options. We have plenty of DVD’s and entertainment centers people can use. If you are into gaming we have a kick-ass gaming system set up. A library full of all kinds of books. Everything from entertainment to educational. I think there is even yoga classes. I’ve tried yoga before and its totally relaxing.”

“It’s hard fighting against the ‘bad guys’ when you’re looking back at all the destruction you’ve caused. Why do I have the right to tell someone they’re wrong when what I did was so fundamentally wrong? I’m trying to make up for it, but that bad part of me still exists no matter how hard I try to shut it away,” Jemma said, forcing back tears.

Jemma took another sip of water. She was incredibly thirsty, but she knew if she drank it any faster, she’d make herself sick.

“I’m right awful at video games, to my friends’ dismay. I’m much better at board games,” Jemma forced a smile. Her friends weren’t around to do either, so it didn’t really matter and she hadn’t really felt up to making new friends since she arrived. It would feel too much like forgetting her friends--her family. She didn’t know the last time she watched TV without curling up in Fitz’ lap either. It would feel too lonely without him.

“I could sit and read for days, completely losing the world around me,” Jemma said, her smile becoming more genuine. “I’ll have to check it out sometime.”  Jemma reached for the broth, risking another drink. This time she gulped down a bit more and waited for her stomach to react, but for the moment it was okay.

“I’ve tried yoga and meditation. I’m not the best at clearing my mind. I’d need an amazing instructor to accomplish that,” Jemma tried to joke, hoping it didn’t come off too flat.

“Yes. Though inevitably their faulty logic would have caused them to become infected. They thought to control those that were. An army to control the world. So I stopped them.” A simple solution perhaps, but the plan was anything but. It took patience and precision.

Isaac would help with the cure but . .”Biology is not my preferred field. But if you need anything built let me know.” That at least he could handle.

“That’s where I struggle ethically,” Jemma admitted. “I have a hard time punishing someone for a crime they have yet to commit. What if we could have prevented them from doing it and converted them to the good side? But if we don’t take action, we’ve condemned the world. No one person should have to make that decision, but that’s usually what it comes down to--one person. Then we have to hope that decision that was forced upon us makes us the hero and not the villain of the story.” “Thank you for the offer. I enjoy your company and your insight.”
