There's soo much I want to talk about right now, but I can't because I don't want to spoil anything for anyone else. All I can say is this... Go to a theater that is playing it. If the theater doesn't have it, that's fine, but if it's at all possible then...

I drove two hours away to get to a theater that was showing it and I have zero regrets. The episode was so insanely good and there's so much to unpack that I spent the entire drive home thinking about it (and every second since there)

Finally got my best friend to watch TADC after a full year of me talking about it!! I found out my local theater is showing the finale this week so they're binging it today before we go see the finale tonight! (of course, I only found out about my local theater having it after driving 2 hours to see it bc nowhere close to me was originally showing it but oh well)

Finally, someone IRL I can talk to about the finale!!

TADC FINALE MENTION

The finale really recontextualizes scenes of past episodes, specifically in e6 when Pomni hugs Jax. Jax is obviously caught off guard at the moment of Pommi's touch

Jax's reaction to the hug is sudden, raw and fearful. He panics and immediately shoves her away, and then, for a split second stares at his hands then off into the distance, before masking with the cartoon smile.

After knowing the context of Jax's history with his mother, I can imagine physical touch, especially hugs, are complicated. While his panic is in part because of the past with Ribbit and closeness in general, it is also similar to what happened with his mom that night. The detail of Jax's panic reaction being to push away and the split second where he stops and realizes what he's done(again) is so heartbreaking.

best case scenario Digital Circus gets remembered in a similar way as Steven Universe: a show that was Really Fucking Good and had nuanced characters and interesting things to say, but the audience wasn't quite ready for it and it imploded into a discourse ball. four years from now I expect to see lesbians drawing Jax like she's a renaissance muse the same way people still draw Pearl or Lapis

"if Jax is a trans woman she's still an abuser so she's bad representation so the show is transphobic" you're an idiot. you want your blorbos to be perfect ideal angels, I want my blorbos to be realistic, nuanced, flawed human beings, we are not the same. I LIKE that she's messy and fucked up and problematic, I think it's a realistic depiction of how a lot of repressed and traumatized trans women are. I think the show goes to great lengths to explore how and why she is the way she is, and to evoke sympathy for this kind of person. it doesn't excuse her actions but it does make them understandable. and I think the fact women like that deserve sympathy is an idea worth stating and worth shouting. yes she's a bully and she hurt everyone around her and that may never change. she still deserves sympathy.
