2023 Documentaries #353 - Room 237 (2012) (3/19/23) If only Political Conspiracy theorists spent as much time coming up with theories as these people do about Kubrick's The Shining. As a fan of Postmodern Deconstructionism in Literature, I appreciate people taking meaning to this film frame by frame. Nothing is accidentally placed in frame in a Kubrick film. 2023 Punk Project #76 - Freshies - All Sleep's Secrets, (Album) (1978) (3/17/23) A "new to me" Punk band with a cassette only release. It's pretty much just Chris Sievey aka Frank Sidebottom. It's a bit proto-New Wave and some early back masking and tape manipulation. 1973 Movies #15 - The Sting (3/13/23) Seven Academy Awards like it's no big deal. Robert Redford's only nomination for acting was one of the few losers for the film. Newman and Redford teamed together for the first time since "Butch & Sundance" and they are paired with director George Roy Hill again. The plot is complex but not too complicated to follow. 1973 Movies #14 - Tom Sawyer (3/8/23) Directed by Don Taylor. The musical adaptation of the Mark Twain book is a bit unorthodox but it somehow works. Johnny Whitaker makes a great Tom and Jodie Foster shows promise as Becky Thatcher. Jeff East is Huck Finn but he'll get his big moments in the 1974 sequel. 1973 Movies #13 - The Way We Were (3/7/23) Directed by Sydney Pollack. Robert Redford and Barbara Streisand set standard by which Romance films are judged for decades. Despite the two beautiful stars and wonderful supporting cast, the plot takes some sudden left turns and you need to overlook some holes. But the age old question remains that keeps us going back to this film. 1973 Movies #12 - Day For Night (3/3/23) Directed by Truffaut. Championed by Steven Spielberg as the best movie about making a movie. It was my first Truffaut film decades ago. It's a great introduction to French films. 2023 Punk Project #74 - Boomtown Rats - A Tonic For The Troops (Album) (1978) (2/26/23) The second album from the Irish band finds them in that odd world between Punk and burgeoning New Wave. The band will become known for clever lyrics and that's on display here. 2023 Documentaries #352 - Ruthless: Monopoly's Secret History (2023) (2/26/23) The history of the game is surprising. Portrayed as the ultimate Capitalist game by being the antithesis to what makes for successful Capitalism. 1973 Movies #11 - American Graffiti (2/26/23) Directed by George Lucas. If he hadn't given us Star Wars, we'd still be talking about the influence this film has had on movies and television. 2023 Ice Cream Parlors #8 - Ked's Ice Cream (2/25/22) Cookies 'n Cream. Pistachio Almond Saffron. Mango. Interesting selection of flavors available. But not overwhelming in taste. Mango was just bad. 2023 Punk Project #73 - The Rezillos - Can't Stand the Rezillos (Album) (1978) (2/19/23) This fun punk New Wave band is from Edinburgh but recorded in New York. So it has influences of both and of a band that had played together for years. Fun stuff. 2023 Ice Cream Parlors #7 - Marble Slab Creamery (2/19/23) Vanilla Heath Oreo. Cinnamon Vanilla Almond. I didn't realize the chain had combined with the cookie company. The concept is still solid. But the Vanilla didn't have much flavor itself. The Cinnamon Vanilla was a better option. Decent but not special. 1973 Movies #10 - A Man For Hanging (2/12/23) A pretty mean spirited Western. Hard to believe this is listed as Made-For-Telvision. Peter Breck, who you would recognize from Maverick and Big Valley, is a deformed crazy man who is hunted by a posse. 1973 Movies #9 - The Three Musketeers (2/12/23) Directed by Richard Lester (A Hard Day's Night) with a cast of stars everywhere you look. This is where I really fell in love with Michael York as an actor (D'Artagnan). The film returns the story to the comedy of the original work. Yet the action is well choreographed. 2023 Documentaries #351 - Zora Neale Hurston: Claiming a Space (2023) (2/11/23) An amazing voice coming out of the Harlem Renaissance. She makes important observations about her own culture and became one of the best literary voices of her day. 2023 Ice Cream Parlors #6 - Baskin-Robbins (2/12/23) Gold Medal Ribbon. Baseball Nut. Gold Medal is a vanilla and chocolate ice cream mix with a caramel ribbon. Pretty good flavor. Baseball Nut is a vanilla base with black raspberry and cashews. My complaint is similar to other places, you need a good crunchy and salty cashew against the sweet flavors.
