thinking abt the parallels between aang being katara’s first friend her own age and being able to understand her grief and trauma as the sole survivor of his own culture’s genocide, while also showing her how to have fun and loosen up and be a kid again—and suki being the first friend sokka’s age that he makes, and her being able to understand his burden as the protector of his people and having to be a leader at such a young age, while also showing him how to enjoy himself and let go and be silly and goofy and have fun—and what it means for these kids who can empathize with their unique grief and fear to show them how to live beyond their trauma and their pain, and be supported by katara and sokka in return.

So I watched all of avatar the last airbender again and felt like I needed to do a redraw of and old piece I did. That’s rough buddy...

My father says Azula was born lucky. He says I was lucky to be born.

I love this moment. There is such a complex range of emotions Zuko expresses. It’s the type of emotional complexity that ATLA does well.

He is afraid for his sister, already sad by the thought of his sister’s death, but he’s a bit resigned because he hasn’t decided to help her or save her but he clearly doesn’t want her to die. He would have been a bit relieved if she did fall because she is currently working to help the fatherlord take over the world.

Once she saves herself he’s a bit resentful. He might have been a bit relieved actually to see his perfect (lucky) sister fail. It would have humanized her. But instead her success reminds him of the narrative Ozai has been feeding them his whole life “Azula was born lucky. I was lucky to be born.” It reminds him of all the shame he’s been carrying around his whole life. It reignites the competitive relationship between them Ozai has used to keep them divided and fighting eachother for Ozai’s attention and validation (which makes Ozai feel powerful).

I also love that Azula used her crown. Symbolizing how she uses her status to stay alive, maintain her position, her influence. The Ember Island episode clearly shows how fragile and pathetic her manipulation is with normal people outside of the use of firebending or the royal titles. This also shows how the difference between Zuko and Azula makes Zuko better suited for the title of firelord. Unlike Azula, Zuko does not use his title to control people and is then less likely to abuse his power as firelord.

This scene also seems to alude to the possibility of Azula’s redemption arc, which was also hinted at in the Ember Island episode and how Zuko is likely to eventually be in a position to show Azula mercy.

gaang power ranking (according to azula’s perfect and extremely insightful observations)

first up of course is sokka. he’s their leader, and they would all be completely useless without him, since he is literally the only one of them capable of using his brain. (letter grade: A+)

the little blind one who follows him around seems to be his second in command. she’s very whiny, but admittedly not entirely untalented. (respectable A-)

the waterbender loves to attack but is also a healer. has zuzu energy. like if zuzu was a girl and slightly less useless. (solid B)

the avatar is very small and delicate, like a flower, or a porcelain teacup. he wouldn’t last a day without sokka. poor thing. she almost feels sorry for him.... (pathetic C-)

the kyoshi warrior must have something going for her, because she clearly means a lot to sokka. or maybe she’s just hot. yeah that’s probably what it is. (perfunctory D)

zuko contributes nothing to the team and only joined them to spite azula because he is a terrible brother who loves to menace and revel in the misery of his perfect angel sister who has never done anything wrong in her life. she has yet to discern any other possible motive, so that must have been it. (F— but would be lower still if possible)

Sorry Aang, Zuko’s was cooler. Granted, that’s mostly because Zuko does things ten times more dramatically than everyone else. 

Katara should really be more careful though.

This is so interesting to me. Zuko grabs Katara (rather than shoving her) as he runs past, goes into a roll (he lands first, absorbing the shock,) and finishes the roll shielding her from the debris without landing on top of her. The whole action is designed specifically to protect her (and to a lesser degree, himself) from as much damage as possible – from any source, including his own body.

Aang on the other hand, just frickin’ tackles her.

The difference between a battle-hardened veteran with years of combat training… and a regular (if agile) dude who really just wants to save her from death by boulder by any means necessary.

It’s some really brilliant, subtle acting. We already know that the animators on this show are amazing, but this is a really good example of why. Not just the flawless rendering of what the characters are doing, but the careful consideration of how they do it.

Without a doubt, though, the best part of this post was this masterpiece of a tag: #katara vs. rocks

#atla#I wonder how much this has to do with aang being an airbender too#like he literally just kind of throws himself at things a lot because like#he can fly#and generally use airbending to cushion impacts#whereas firebending by necessity probably involves a lot of ‘stop drop and roll’ technique#especially when involving a kid like zuko

Oh, that makes sense as well (And stopping, dropping, and roolling is what what we;re supposed to do if we’re caught on fire, so it makes sense that a firebender would know know this.

obviously sokka is like, the platonic ideal of an Older Brother. and katara and azula are both suuuch Little Sisters. and it’s clear that toph and aang are both Only Children. but zuko.... does not have older brother energy. at all. so I think that means that lu ten, at some point, must’ve been around a lot, and was the older brother figure that both zuko and azula looked up to. and that’s why zuko is, in fact, the ultimate Middle Child.

Look, there are some people you’re just always going to be a little bit in love with. Your high school sweet heart, your college sweet heart, prince zuko, the first significant other you live with. Just accept that it’s normal and move on.

just read a fic where zuko describes jumping in front of the lighting for katara was “the easiest decision [he’s] ever made in [his] life.”

And like, fuck, canonically, zuko has absolutely struggled with making the right decision, and doing the right thing in the past—katara even says that when she threatens him in the western air temple. He struggled so badly with the decision to free appa it literally made him sick. zuko suffered two whole seasons of moral dilemma battling loyalty to his country and doing the right thing and joining the avatar. But in the finale when azula aims her lightning at katara, zuko just fucking leaps in front of it without a second thought or breath of hesitation like it absolutely was the easiest decision he’s ever made.
