A02069 - 1:72 Boulton Paul Defiant “One of the unsung heroes of the Battle of Britain”
The time has come and we can barely contain our excitement! One of the first releases of 2015 has hit the shelves!
Often maligned as a failure due to it not having any front facing machine guns and its vulnerability from below, the Boulton Paul Defiant did have some success against German bombers thanks to its heavy turret armament. The RAF would often operate the Defiant alongside the Hurricane in mixed formations confusing and trapping German fighters but the Defiant was vulnerable to the Luftwaffe when on its own.
However, during the Blitz the Defiant proved itself as a strong Night Fighter and caught the Luftwaffe’s pilots off guard due to its rear facing turrets and shot down more enemy aircraft during this time than any other.
On 26th August 1940 Defiants flown by RAF No.264 Squadron intercepted a large formation of enemy aircraft and we’re locked in a deadly Dogfight.
They shot down a Bf 109 and at least three Do 17s, including 5K+AR which was recently discovered and recovered from the Goodwin Sands on the South East coast in Kent - some 25 minutes from Airfix HQ.
Our completely new tooled model of this iconic and often underrated aircraft is available now from retailers and Airfix.com
Now that is what you call a selfie! :)
