I have begun creating a new dance pieceâ£ïž
On February 23 and 24, 2025, I will present this new work at the Kibirufes, a theater festival in Fukuoka. This time, I am taking on a duet piece, collaborating with my dancer friend, Ayaka Shimoda!
The creative process has just started, and ideas are slowly coming together.
The theme of this new piece is about "not speaking."
In Japan, there are so many times when I wonder, "Why don't they say it?" or "Why donât they ask?"
It's frustrating.
People working in administrative offices are forced to create false documents under orders from above, and the truth is blacked out.
Not speakingð
Not talking
Hiding
Pretending it never happened.
I think this might not be limited to Japan, but especially in Japan, this has been a long-standing habit.
During the war, after the war... but when did it really start?
Ever since I returned to Japan after spending time in the West, I have felt this strong sense of discomfort.
And since moving to Fukuoka, I feel this atmosphere of not asking questions even more keenly.
This piece is a reflection on Japanâs unique atmosphere of silence.
I'm currently focusing on the case of Toshio Akagi, who was forced to falsify documents related to Moritomo Gakuen, leading to his mental and physical breakdown and eventual suicide.
Also, Iâm looking at the period during the Japanese empire when the Korean language was banned, and Japanese was forcibly imposed. (I watched the film Kotoba Atsume).
Taking away someone's language means stripping away their thoughts, personality, and spirit.
I need to dive even deeper into these ideas.
What kind of piece will it become...
I feel the usual mix of excitement and anxiety as the creative process unfolds.
Iâll be sharing updates regularly.
In this blog, I aim to share my thoughts and reflections, mainly around my activities as a dancer. Things I canât fully express in my Facebook or Instagram posts will find their place here.
If you let me know youâve read it, it will really encourage meâª
Thank you for your support ð¥º
