The U.S.S. Reliant in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan was the earliest Miranda-class starship shown on screen.  Fans have long speculated that the class existed in the time frame of the original Star Trek series.  This digital model by Prologic9 shows what a Miranda-class vessel may have looked like prior to the refitting of obsolescent Federation starships in the 2270s.
