The Two Brothers, watercolor and ink (1920) Elenore Abbott (American, 1875–1935) created the illustration The Two Brothers for the 1920 Scribner's Sons edition of Grimm's Fairy Tales. Applying the Art Nouveau aesthetic, she depicts Princess Rosette on the dragon mountain, awaiting being sacrificed to the seven-headed beast. A young hunter later arrives to rescue her from the monster.
David Cusick was a Tuscarora (Haudenosaunee) artist who self-published the first known English-language record of Indigenous stories told BY an Indigenous writer-illustrator. His book is called David Cusick’s Sketches of Ancient History of the Six Nations and you can read it for free online.

Working on another 5"x7" with a decent amount of detail. The act of painting still feels more laborious than I remember, but I do think I’m continuing to slowly move out of this extended period of burnout.
I’m finding that my sketches feel a bit stiff when I try to trace something from my sketchbook, so I’m experimenting by just freehand sketching a vague idea/composition and working out poses and details organically as I go. I always felt very nervous doing this in the past because I worry about it turning out poorly, and wasting my time and materials, but I’m working on quieting my inner critic somewhat, and I think embracing some of this mild chaos is good for getting that part of my brain to shut up (at least a little).
I also feel some pressure to work faster and not dawdle, which is dumb and another bad habit I’m trying to drop. I miss mindlessly fiddling with little details for many hours.
