No matter how far removed from her childhood Reagan got, there was still something utterly thrilling to her in finding and pocketing other people’s things. In her youth, it had been stealing, but now she couldn’t afford to risk getting herself arrested over something as dumb as pickpocketing. Instead, she found the time on weekends to go out with her metal detector on the beaches, scanning the shores for any sign of something she could pick up and add to her ever growing collection of trinkets. People were always leaving things behind or losing them to the surf and even if it wasn’t quite the same rush of excitement that nabbing it right off of someone’s person brought, it was as close as Reagan was going to get there on the island.
Wandering further down the shoreline, the machine in her hand started to buzz, indicating the presence of something that hopefully would be worthwhile. Stooping down to the ground, she dug underneath, quickly making contact a few inches down with a rather sandy ring. It was quite a nice engagement ring, probably lost by some vacationing couple that had just gotten together, and Reagan had a gleam in her eye as she picked it up, turning it over in her hand. Glancing to the side, she saw someone watching, and she quickly flashed them a bright smile. “Any chance this is yours?” she asked, lifting the ring up before letting a sly smirk cross her features. Turning towards the person, Reagan adjusted her position, holding the ring in front of her as she transferred down to one knee. “If not, it could be if you marry me.”
It had been a year and a half since Sasha had first stepped foot on the sandy beach of Catalina Island after she had moved into the Avalon apartment she had been given for this new part of her life. ‘Think of it this way,” they had said. ‘How many people wish for a fully fresh start in life? You can now decide who you want to Leah Whitmore to be.’ Leah Whitmore. That’s who she was now. Thanks to the witness protection program, she couldn’t be Sasha Ruvelle for the foreseeable future. And on top of that, she was on her own, unable to go see her sister or her father and step-mother, unable to see the friends and colleagues she had left behind overnight. Sure, her family knew about where she was, but they were only very rarely speaking. Sasha sighed as she let Mowgli, her Siberian Husky, off the leash to let him play in the water. It always made her smile when saw how happy it made him and how much fun he had when playing with the incoming waves. Well, at least all of this had been good for him. The big city had been left behind and he had seemed more than just happy about the change in scenery.
Continuing to stroll down the shoreline, she spotted a brunette with a metal detector, walking into her general direction. Curious, Sasha tilted her head as she noticed that the other looked like she had just found something. Sure enough, after a couple of seconds of checking the sand, she had a ring in her hand. The inevitable happened then –– the woman’s senses had alerted her that someone was watching and her gaze landed on Sasha’s, her smile causing one of her own to appear on the redhead’s lips; until the words coming from her causing a laugh to bubble up in Sasha’s throat. “Gosh, take a girl out to dinner first! Does no one believe in romance anymore?” she joked in return. Taking a couple steps towards her, a question in the back of her mind that quickly reached her lips. “Are you looking for anything in particular?”
