It wasn’t uncommon for Nick to wake up in a stranger’s bed. In fact, he mostly preferred it that way. He always woke up to the smell of sex, the taste of alcohol still on his tongue, a warm naked body sprawled out next to him. He loved not having to remember what he did the night before or the name of who he was with because in the morning he could just leave. Nick was good at leaving. He’d happily accept breakfast and a ‘good morning’ kiss from whatever bloke he’d ended up pulling. Then, he’d take the phone number offered to him, promise to text soon with no real intention of doing so, and go about his life.
Leaving was easy. It was the staying that proved more difficult. Staying meant commitment and effort. Staying meant vulnerability and trust and all things that made Nick feel weak and out of control. Because when he fell, he fell hard. It was terrifying giving someone that much power over his feelings. Like painting a target on your head, handing someone a loaded gun and praying they’ll care about you enough to not pull the trigger. Besides, why stay with one person when Nick could have a different one every night? No fighting, no getting bored, no stress. Just sex, drinks, and good times.
But, fuck George Shelley for making him want more. Fuck George Shelley for making him want High School Musical Marathons and midnight cupcake runs and early morning cuddles and drinking without the promise of sex and more than just one night. Fuck George Shelley and his stupid monkey qualities and his ridiculously fake looking pink lips. Fuck his Disney personality and childish dimples because Nick has done staying before. He’s done it and he’s regretted it and goddamnit he is so much better at leaving.
