Everytime I see or think of this bible verse, I think of a different person. I don’t know why, because these people pop up in my head very randomly. No specific meaning. My prayer for today shall be: I thank you Lord, for letting all these people come into my life, either shortterm or longterm persons. Each one of them made me to the person I am now. I’m far from perfect, but I’d like to believe that I’m growing as a person, as a woman, as an individual. So thank you for making an impact, no matter how big or small. Amen.

to my first friend on PEx, my constant conversationalist. I remember the intelligent conversations we had, the political topics we used to discuss about, even though I am not a citizen, you still listened to my opinion. I remember the times we cheered for Rachelle Ann Go and Christian Bautista, when you were always annoyed when Shins name was written wrong. I remember the days when you fondly posted videos of your loving daughter when she was three or even two years old.

Social Media sometimes sucks, but most of the times it gives us human beings, the opportunity to connect to people we meet online and have newfound friends. Eventhough I never met you personally, I cherish the moments we shared together online. I regret not making the effort to see you, everytime I went to the Philippines for vacation. Blame it on my shyness. I still can’t imagine what happened to you, and what your daughter is going through. Sadly, only when such things happen, we re-connect with old friends. Whatever you had, ate Nins, no more pains, no more sufferings and I know that God took you from us because he needed you more. Our Lord Jesus Christ has already planned everything for your daughter Reb. She now has her very own guardian angel. Rest in paradise, ate nins. Keep on writing. <3

i have discovered that i do not know anything about my people. the other day, i met another filipina. she asked me what type of filipino i was. it had never been asked of me like that before: had always been asked, “where are your parents from?” “what part of the philippines?” never: “what type of filipino are you?” never have i faced the acknowledgement that more groups than i know how to comprehend call the archipelago i consider home theirs as well. i did not know what to say, at first, before i managed to stammer out, “my mother is boholano, my dad is from cagayan de oro.” and she replied, “oh, my family is visayan also.” i nodded and smiled, as if i understood her words’ significance beyond knowing what that meant geographically. i did not know what that meant. i looked up ‘boholano’ today for the first time and learned that they are also considered visayan. looked up ‘cagayan de oro’ and learned it means ‘river of gold.’ it shamed me to realize i had never known this before. shamed me to realize that all i knew of my ancestors’ heritage was the food and a smattering of language i can only understand in some contexts. for a while, i hesitated to call myself ‘filipina-american,’ as if hyphenating my identity was laying claim to something false. i do not feel ‘american’: blonde-haired, blue-eyed, white-skinned with an inexplicable love for football and hamburgers but i do not feel i can call myself ‘filipina’ when i cannot even count to ten in tagalog. my great-great-uncle was a president of the philippines. i wonder sometimes if he is ashamed of this girl who calls him relative when she cannot tell someone how to cook adobo. my family told me stories about individuals: how my grandfather met his first wife hiding in a well, how my other grandfather rejected japanese treasure but i do not know if i had other ancestors who fought against the americans when they came. i was told stories about glass slippers and princes turning into frogs but i do not know the folklore of my homeland beyond the half-truth tales my father told me about the ‘dwarf’ in his basement. my parents did not speak tagalog to me after a certain age. i think they told me once it was because they did not want me to have an accent i do not know if that is truth or false memory, but i know i can speak the languages of the countries that colonized us: leave me in the streets of madrid or milwaukee, and i will get on fine, but if you take me into the heart of manila, i may only just get by. and i cannot say even in poetry what it feels like not to know these things. like there is a fundamental part of myself missing that i can never regain like i am failing the people who came before me— my family— even as i assimilate into the world they longed or were forced to be a part of. i do not know anything about my people. but i know enough to know it feels so much like not knowing anything about myself.

Taxi memory in the Philippines

I remember one instance when my brother, cousin and mom took the taxi from the domestic airport in manila going to buendia. I have no clue how far or near the places are. For me buendia et al. is nearby. So as usual it was traffic but the good thing the taxi-meter was on. So since I was holding the money, I prepared a certain amount to give to the driver. Once we arrived in Buendia, my cousin and brother got our suitcase and went to the bus right away. My mom followed them and I handed the driver money plus tip. Since I saw the amount on the taxi meter, I didnt need to ask. The moment I handed him the money and said thank you, I think he wanted to tell me something - like 'i drove you here the fastest I can' and wanted me to add more tip than I already gave him. Since I didn't know what to do, I went to the bus also. Haha. As a tourist it is actually fun but then again imagine you don't know if your money is enough to go by taxi. It is very unusual to ask the driver for the price before even getting inside.

the unsung heroes of smart gilas

coaching staff of course and three players that come into my mind: Gabe Norwood, Ranidel De Ocampo and Captain Might mouse: Jimmy Alapag. Norwood: hands down to his defending skills. that booiiii De Ocampo: me, a wannabe basketball player, could idolize him. He is actually a power forward, but very useful also outside. Really chill when taking wide shots, or driving inside. Shy, but explosive Mighty Mouse Jimmy Alapag: that's a captain every team needs. a confidence booster, someone who trusts in his teammates, who doesn't want to see himself on the score board all the time. Wants his bro's to shine and score. Lifts his mates up, when they are feeling down. He could have easily made that lay up, but opted to pass to Gary David, who had a shooting curse at the moment. wow. I bow my head. AND every time Gilas was trailing, he made the important shots.. that went in!! damn, this team got what it takes to be a champion!! Laban Pilipinas! Puso!

Smart Gilas Pilipinas

Ok ok, obviously I haven't moved on yet from the fantastic FIBA ASIA CHAMPIONSHIP. I have to admit though, that I had no idea, that this championship was happening. Good thing I am following the right people on twitter, who had been flooding my timeline since day one. I am became an instant fan, ok well, I became a fan since the Jones Cup, but nonetheless, I AM SUCH A PROUD FAN!!!

I can even name the players, even though I don't watch the PBA. It is just so sad, that the coach couldn't have more players for the try out, because their commercial basketball team didn't let them go. But it's not coach Chot Reyes' loss, it's the players' loss. Coach Chot even worked with the players he had, and he did succeed. Yet I even wonder, why the management of the teams from the PBA don't work together as one, and give the players away that are needed, or even work around the schedule, if there are national duties. It's also good for them. I have been Youtube-ing some potential players, and these potential players were always involved in many brawls between other players. And some of the National Players (maybe except Sakuragi Marc Pingris) respect the players and don't fight them. Maybe if they bonded more often, there was less tension and no "personalan". But I am kind of familiar with the rules and regulations of Basketball, where you can only have 12 players in your line up. I wouldn't want Coach to choose between the guys who made the Spain World Championshin happen and those who never had National Duties experience.

I do have my personal favourite, Jeff Chan!!! He's my idol, he can shoot from anywhere and when he is called a foul, he just smiles. Just like Larry Fonacier. I love his nickname "baby face assassin". Nasa loob ang kulo. I am really excited about next year. World Championship in Spain!! .. I really hope I'll be able to go and show support. I hope by the end of this year, it will be revealed where the prelims will be held. Spain is not that small, and little are the chances that the Philippines go far. I am just being realistic. But I know that they will do their best and do everything in their power to win games!

But for now. SMART GILAS PILIPINAS you are one heck of a team! I hope the PBA and SBP can work together as a team!

time is definitely not on my side, and this mood of mine is not influencing me so well. I wish I was more hardworking, I wish I was less lazy.. bla bla bla.. 

I HAVE TO CHANGE MYSELF. I have to be more hardworking if I want to. I want to be more hardworking, therefore I will be more hardworking!! Starting now. I can't blame my sprained ankle for being immobile. I am not immobile. I AM JUST FREAKING LAZY! Fellow colleagues of mine are on Class trips, or visiting friends but still doing their Final Thesis. And what am I doing? Sitting at home, pretending that I am busy... but in all honesty I am busy watching TV or surf YouTube. I do not like this attitude of mine. And I have already reached half time and I haven't written one single page.... not even a sentence. 

Oh Lord, please help me. I know I've been asking for your help always, but please kick my ass harder! Kuya is stressing me also, but he doesn't count. He can't relate... I think.

No more excuses. Tomorrow is not certain, yesterday is gone. But you have the present to make a difference. 

Remember, three hours a day, keeps the pressure away. I am so sure that this hardwork of mine will pay off someday. A vacation on a far away island will do too.. with the family. <3
