One of my favorite moments with my dad was to this song right here. He loves R. Kelly so we would always listen to his songs, but with this one, my dad taught me the dance that goes along with it. Once I learned it, I could not get enough of it. Every time I heard it I would instantly get happy, grab my dad’s hand, and start to dance with him.
At an early age, my mom had Karen Clark Sheard, Kirk Franklin, and my favorite gospel group, Mary Mary playing through her car speakers everywhere we went. Eventually I learned all the songs, but one song in particular she had me listen to and it was “Little Girl”. Now that I am older and have dealt with some situations, I can see why my mom had me listen to it so much.
This song made me fall in love with my biggest celebrity crush, Chris Breezy or formally known as Chris Brown. I really had the heart eyes for the kid at a very early age. I was around six or seven years old when my cousin Donnie played this song from his first album and I immediately became infatuated with him. I bet my cousin got tired of me because I wanted to play that same song continuously, but if she had not then I would not be such a big fan of him. So thank you Donyale for playing this song in the car every time I was with you, I love you!
In middle school, me and my bestfriends were obsessed with singing and dancing so much that we actually created a music group and would write our songs. A group that we looked up to the most was the OMG Girlz. They were a little bit older than us, but still very much relatable. Often times, we would go over to each other’s house to “practice” and look up videos of them singing and dancing and learn it all. We would all practice their songs and try to sound like them and even learn their dance routines. Loverboy was something that we had down packed, and it was our favorite song from them. I remember us performing it like we were actually on stage and singing to people; those were the good ole days. Thank OMG Girlz for the role that you played in me and my bestfriends lives.
I danced to this song at my recital my junior year of high school and it was one of the most serious pieces I have ever danced to. It was a very deep song about the horrible things that blacks went through in the deep south when racism was at its peak. I could really connect with it because it was apart of my history and I was able to tell the story with my body, through dance. It is a dance that I still remember til this day, and something that I will never forget.
During most of senior year in high school, I was not the happiest person because I was losing my first love or the “love of my life” at the time. We were going through problems a lot around the holidays and I “thought that things like this get better with time”, but I was sadly mistaken. I had eventually reached a breaking point where I had to put my own happiness and sanity first. It was one of the hardest and most hurtful things that I had to do because I did not want to lose him, but I had to do what was best for me.
Graduation Day! The day that I had been waiting for forever! I have never smiled so much in a weekend, it was crazy. It was really surreal to me and I felt like I was living in a dream. The days leading up to graduation, everybody in my class would blast this song after school in the parking lot and we would all sing and dance to it. We even tried to have this song played our graduation, but it did not work out that way. Nevertheless, I know that song was playing in our heads as we threw our caps in the air in celebration of us reaching this great milestone.
Goodbye is something that I had to say numerous times before I came to college, and I hated every time I had to tell somebody that. I was excited for the next chapter in my life, but I did not want to leave my family behind. This song was performed by the other girls who danced with me my senior year in high school. The dance was dedicated to me and my friend since we were going to college and it would be our last dance recital with them. I remember watching them perform this as I stood in the wings just reminiscing our time together and soon becoming emotional. That same emotion I felt for them then was how I felt on move-in day. As the day went on, I became anxious and more sad to see them leave me and once they finally did, I had this song on repeat and cried for a couple hours.

Initially, I did not listen to the album when it first came out. I would just hear the songs on the radio and begin listening to each song a little bit at a time. When I came across this one, I thought it was interesting because the lyrics were blunt, the sound and bass was defined, and he even stopped in the middle of the song to talk about gun control. I was happy that Kendrick was so blunt and honest because topics like that should not be sugarcoated to make people think it is less of a problem than it actually is. I want to thank Kendrick Lamar for this song and rewarding us with such an album.

When Jay-Z’s 13th album, 4:44, dropped, I was on summer vacation with my two bestfriends and as soon as we got the news we hurriedly downloaded TIDAL so we could hear it. One of the songs that had me engaged and really just blown away was this one. The reason being was because it was all true, and I felt like our nation as a whole needed to hear the truth; that racism was and still is alive and well. “I’m not black, I’m OJ”, this lyric is something that really stuck with me through whole song because nobody should be defined by the color of their skin, but by who they are as a person.

After graduation and this great vacation that me and my bestfriends had experienced together, it made me realize that we were really “Meant to Be”. Of course we have had our ups and downs, but throughout the obstacles, we were always there for each other. I was honesty afraid that college would tear us apart and diminish our friendship, but I feel that it has done nothing but brought us closer together. Thank you Kailyn, Teylor, and Clarke for dealing with me and sticking by my side for so many years. You know what they say, separation makes the heart grow fonder. :)
Right before I came to Georgia Southern, I had many sit-down talks with my family members, but the one talk that stuck with me the most was the one I had with my dad. Not to say that I did not value everyone else’s advice to me about coming to college, but I am a daddy’s girl so whatever talk I have with him is going to be vital and will forever stick with me.
