This season, I use the multi-layered analogy of “corsetry” to grapple with the contrasts of obedience and DIS-obedience. Corsets can be associated with the subservience of one’s true self as a result of forced standards of morality and beauty. They represent an outward performance of the desired body, irrespective to individuals’ beliefs and ambitions, alluding to ideas of submission, repression, displeasure - OBEDIENCE. Unquestioned obedience precludes embracing reality, it creates distortions and misrepresentations and can lead to manipulation … a false and frail sense of security and stability. Most recently, corsetry has been reclaimed as a symbol of fantasy, fetishes, pleasure, emancipation – tangible DISOBEDIENCE that persuades one to radically confront value systems that deprive them of being, experimenting, and feeling without bounds.
