Time Out meets ‘The Souvenir’ star Tom Burke to talk recreating the past, ‘Strike’ and learning from Alan Rickman
Turns out, the man most famous for playing the wizarding world's toughest teacher was a philanthropist, a mentor, and an enormous amount of fun to be around. Alan Rickman might be gone, but he left us a lot to think about -- and a lot to take as inspiration.
Fair play to Tom Burke. The 37-year-old actor is a bona fide television star thanks to The Musketeers, War & Peace and Strike, the BBC adaptation of J K Rowling’s pseudonymous detective novels featuring brooding, one-legged ex-soldier Cormoran Strike.
His three actor godparents included Alan Rickman, who directed Burke in a 2008 production of Strindberg’s Creditors at the Donmar. Burke is rather tired of being asked about the late and much loved Rickman but volunteers that he was “very kind, and always would get everybody involved. If there was anybody on the edge of the room they’d be brought into the middle of it.” (Source: [x])

Alan Rickman at the opening night of Hair (2008)
The psychedelic pulse of Hair hit Central Park on August 7, as the cast of the 40th anniversary revival of of the peace-loving show took its opening night bows in front of a packed house at the Delacorte Theatre. The Age of Aquarius dawned in the park as a star-studded audience, including big names like Philip Seymour Hoffman, Marisa Tomei, Kathleen Turner and original Hair cast member Ben Vereen, watched. The tribal love-rock musical is especially significant to the Public, as it was the first show ever to debut at a then fledgling Shakespeare Public Theater in 1967 (the show eventually moved to Broadway, of course). At the end of night's performance, as a heady cast including Spring Awakening alum Jonathan Groff and 110 in the Shade's Will Swenson gathered onstage for their infectious finale, the sky opened up and poured rain on the ecstatic audience and players, lending a little extra drama to an already remarkable evening. “I’ll never forget the sight of Alan Rickman in his full Snape outfit and wig singing Happy Birthday To You – it didn’t fit with him at all.
“But it’s quite a cherished memory for Annabelle on her 13th birthday.”
