About The Rebel’s Manifesto

The manifesto was created by Keri Smith. Keri Smith is a Canadian conceptual artist and illustrator; the main focus of her work/research is on creating “open works”, which means pieces that are completed by the reader/user. She has also written many books on creativity: Wreck this Journal; This is Not a Book; How to be an Explorer of the World;  Mess: A Manual of Accidents and Mistakes; The Guerrilla Art Kit; Finish this Book; The Pocket Scavenger.

My Chosen Manifesto

After looking into other possible manifestos to use, I concluded that this one was the one with most potential. I will no longer be using the sunscreen song.

I chose this manifesto for three reasons:

1) It has just the right amount of words to create a relevant typographic design. A manifesto with too many words could’ve overcrowded the page; a manifesto with too little words would have restricted the design of the page.

2) The word REBEL has many connotations, and a lot of imagery comes to mind that’s associated with this word. This gives the manifesto more potential for design.

3) I like the points that are made in this manifesto, like “trends are for suckers”...I think its imaginative, playful and true.

Audio-Visual Presentation

This presentation uses audio and visual effects to evaluate my work this term. 

This video was shot all in one room (7m x 3m space) and was filmed and edited in a 14 hour window. Having no previous experience in film making and editing, this is my first attempt at using film as a medium for graphic design.

Creating the Wooden Letters...

Planning

As a group, this template (for cutting out the letters from wood) was made:

Font used: Krungthep

This font was chosen because of it’s serious, cyber-looking style. The sans-serif font adds a slight informality which gives the text a nice balance. 

‘Oversight’ suggest a certain rigidness of sight, that’s why we picked this font as it has a rigid looking structure.

The Letters I was in charge of: ‘O’ & ‘H’

Making The Letters

^Sticking the paper template on the wood with spray mount.

^Using the band saw to cut the outline of the letter.

^4 holes were drilled in the inner circle of the ‘O’. The blade of this saw was threaded into one of the drilled holes, where the centre of the ‘O’ was then slowly cut along the border.

^This sander was then used to smoothen and shape the inner circle of the ‘O’.

^The corners were refined with the disk sander.

^Finally, the belt sander was used to round off any irregularities along the straight sides of the ‘O’.

The result:

Overall, the execution of making the letters was good. the ‘O’ has a few minor irregularities, but on the hole it has a pretty tidy finish.

Composite Red and Blue Lino Print

This is the most interesting Lino print out of all the variations. Although the writing may be hard to ready, the red and blue overlay makes the image resemble those weird 3D red/blue glasses.

The Lino Cut

As well as using the normal Lino cutting tools, I also used a scalpel knife to cut intricate shapes or make sharp corners. Overall it was a very satisfying and strangely therapeutic session...I sill use Lino Cutting again in the future.

Lino Cut

The Brief for the Lino cut workshop was to create a Lino print inspired by a book that you liked from the library workshop. 

The Book I chose to base my print on was “Think in Colour” (on previous blog post). I really liked the quirky little thumbnail images in the back of the book, particularly, the three linked lightbulbs:

Essentially the Lino cut is based on the linked light bulbs image. To me, the linked lightbulb suggest linking ideas.

Library

Despite being absent on the day of the library special collections workshop, I explored the library for books that might interest me. I took 3 books out that caught my eye:

^This book interested me due to the curious little symbols at the back of the book. 

Fun Fact: If you microwave this book it changes colour.

^there are a few pages covered in these minute little pictograms. I really liked the linking lightbulbs...It’s quite a good use of imagery to suggest the linking of ideas, or something along those lines.

^This book has really good page designs. The page layout is really aesthetic and satisfying to look at.

^Geometrical fruit - quite a quirky idea

^Good use of type - The border type is eye-capturing.

^This is the most amazing book cover I have ever seen. I picked this book purely for its from cover - the cover is just a neon pink, translucent book sleeve...I like the whole composition of the book cover: the vertical writing up the border of the page; the geometric-like title; and the little featured logos in each corner of the book cover.

Jurrga’s Edit

This is Jurrga’s edit of the photoshoot. I think it’s a much stronger edit than mine, as the colours are more neutral - the photo is more subtle and portrays the idea of chats far more tastefully than the brash colours of my photo edit.
