Jonathan Joss was an Indigenous, gay man who was murdered on the first day of Pride month as well as Indigenous History Month. He died protecting his trans husband. Homophobia and racism aren’t marks of the past, and this is a heart breaking reminder of that.

Today is the anniversary of the death of Jonathan Joss (King of the Hill, Parks and Rec). Jonathan Joss was an Indigenous, gay man who died protecting his transgender husband, on the first day of Pride month. Today we remember him and how he protected his family.

The above is a video shared by smrchildsadness on Twitter, showing a person participating in a pride parade exchanging a pride flag with a person standing on his (am using his pronoun based on the TikToks/Tweets of what happened) doorway who had a Portuguese flag. There are sounds of cheers and crying and the two people hug each other as they exchange the flags. The man at the doorway then waved kisses to the crowd within the pride parade.

The Tweet says: "NO YOU DONT UNDERSTAND HE WAS WAVING THE PORTUGUESE FLAG BECAUSE HE DIDN'T HAVE A PRIDE FLAG AND THEY TRADED FLAGS AND HE'S SO EMOTIONAL TO GET HIS OWN PRIDE FLAG I'M EMOTIONALLY RUINED"

For context, apparently they were worried that maybe he's a nationalist because he was waving the Portuguese flag and some nationalists opposing the pride march were waving that flag. But upon interacting with him, it turns out he didn't have have a pride flag and he wanted to wave *a* flag in support of the pride march. So they had an exchange and now he has his own pride flag 😭🥹.

To be more clear, this has been happening for a long time, and the reason it happens is that most birds of prey, and especially Bald Eagles, scavenge carcasses.

Lead is the cheapest, most readily available form of ammunition. It’s also brittle, and shatters into multiple little particles once it makes contact with its target.

Sometimes hunters will field dress their prey (ie butchering the animal on the spot, taking the meat home, and leaving the rest for scavengers). This is great and natural, but if the hunter used lead ammunition, there will likely still be pieces of lead in the carcass. Also, sometimes the animal gets away with lead shot still in its body. I interned at the facility in the post above, and we would often get donations of roadkill for the sanctuary’s residents. Every piece of roadkill had to be x-rayed before we could cut it up to feed the birds. Sometimes there’d be a deer leg that still had lead in it, and that had to be thrown away. Even roadkill isn’t safe.

Lead is also used in fishing tackle, where it is sometimes swallowed by fish, or cut from lines and left to sink to the bottom where it can be mistaken as food by loons or diving ducks. Lead sinkers that have been swallowed by fish can also poison eagles.

Seed-eating birds such as turkeys, pheasants, quail, and mourning doves may also peck at and ingest spent shot, mistaking it for seed.

And it only takes a piece of lead smaller than a pea to kill a bird.

Lead stays in the system, so scavenging a few pieces here and there can build up to that “pea-size” fast. It travels up the food chain too; if an eagle eats a lead-poisoned duck, that eagle is now also poisoned.

Lead poisoning is not a pleasant death. The bird becomes lethargic and weak, and begin to lose weight as their appetite decreases. Sometimes they exhibit neurological issues. The eagle above went blind and was involuntarily vocalizing. They may develop a head tilt or become paralyzed in certain parts of their body. Eventually they will be unable to fly, then walk, then slip into a coma before they eventually die. It is a long and expensive treatment to save a lead-poisoned bird, and many of the lucky birds that make it to rehab, even if they’ve come in for some other reason, have at least some exposure to lead. If it’s just a small amount, or they’re only in the early stages of lead poisoning, they can usually be saved. If they’re too far gone, like the eagle in the post above unfortunately was, they often have to be euthanized before they suffer a worse death.

Sometimes these birds that rehabbers spent so much time (usually unpaid), effort, heartbreak, and money (usually donations) into saving are just going out there to eat more lead. The birds don’t know any better. They don’t know that their food has poison in it. The best thing we can do is to Stop. Putting. Lead. In. The. Environment.

If you hunt or fish, or you have friends or family that hunt or fish, switch to non-lead alternatives. Campaign for the full ban of lead ammunition and tackle. Spread the word on why this is so important, as many people see their right to lead as a right to choose, and don’t fully understand the impact of that choice.

"Whatever the term is" it's intersex. Scientifically Bilateral Gynandromorph if you want to be specific. Not a thing in mammals though. Mostly arthropods and sometimes birds and such. The human equivalent is chimerism/chimera, specially intersex chimera. Chimera's have tissue from more than a single person. I have chimerism and am intersex. It's pride month. Let's all learn something. (Not trying to be snappy, I'm just real sick these butterflies being used as pride symbols for non-intersex people. I have seen so many enamel pins and patches and art with them for nonbinary and trans things. And like, im also nonbinary but thats irrelevant).

OP as an intersex person, ‘intersex’ is not a word used for gynandromorphs or chimerism in nonhuman animals. You had it right the first time. This person is just really mad for some reason. But in science we do not use the word intersex in this context. Intersex is an identity label which covers the social and personal experiences of people who experience genital ambiguity, hormonal imbalances and more. Intersex is a human condition due to prejudice. Being intersex is not inherently queer.

Honestly, I don’t care if trans and nonbinary people relate to or use the imagery of gynandromorphs or chimeras. What I do care about is how everyone sure seems to think these animals are really cool, and they accept their existence, but they hold wildly disgusting and dangerous prejudices towards intersex people, and plenty don’t know or believe that we exist.

They reached the final stage of famine a long time ago. As of recently, Palestine has marked this milestone. Everyday children are famished to the point of death, families are EAGER for bread and water. Let me remind you, they are not starving—these people are BEING starved. Yes, Trump recently sent food drones, but do not be fooled. Just weeks ago, this man burned enough food to completely CURE the hunger there. The babies, elderly, sick, disabled, are all suffering horridly. They’re people too. Babies are meant to be fat with tons of rolls on their necks. But when videos of INFANTS pop up on my feed, the skin on their stomachs are as sunken as the skin on their faces. There is no medicine nor treatment available to those who need it. Conditions are only worsening under the collapsed roofs of war. LITERALLY.

This barely even scratches the surface of the violence in Congo and Palestine. Granted, it matters. Every little act matters. Interact with the videos of the desperate citizens because it matters. Donate what little you can to posted fundraisers because it matters. Stuff empty water bottles with food/supplies and chuck it into the ocean. That shit matters. It will reach them.

Congo and Palestine are hungry, scared. You sharing and interacting with this post matters. World leaders are turning cheek to this, so the rest is up to us. Silence isn’t neutral, it makes you an enemy.

I think a lot of transmisogyny stems from this idea that people are really scared to see a dick. The reason bathrooms and locker rooms and hot springs keep being flash points is because these are all places where if a trans woman is using them, it's possible you might see her dick. A lot of transmisogynistic humor revolves around being traumatized because the subject saw a woman with a penis. And look, to a certain extent I sympathize. I'm not a fan of dick; I dont want this thing either. But if you want to be an ally to trans women, I think a big important step you can take personally is to examine your own reaction to the scenarios I described above, and recognize that a dick is just a body part a girl has sometimes. Seeing it as inherently sexual and/or traumatizing is a major wedge conservatives use to justify their rhetoric

I’m starting to think most transmascs and trans men are really just very butch women. It does not make any sense to me how they use their AGAB as some kind of a ‘gotcha’ and that so many of them identify as lesbians. Is it really a fear of calling yourself straight? Because it honestly seems more like a fear of calling yourself a woman. Most — not all, but most — FTMTF detransitioners were sexually assaulted as children and teenagers, and suffered from gender dysphoria as a result, and most of that group of people were told by other trans people that they absolutely are trans. The detransitioning taboo of ‘changing your mind’ is only really an issue for non-acceptance when it comes to the trans community itself. If you detransition, you are now no longer part of the exclusive in-crowd, and it doesn’t matter that you actually did experience being trans, you are now an other to the trans community, a thing, a stigma, not real. Meanwhile the worst thing that happens from cis people is you get targeted and treated unfairly for having been trans at one point, for a million different reasons. And that is still transphobia, so what was the fucking difference? Why say you’re transgender if you make more of an effort to assign yourself to gender roles while simultaneously cavorting around your status as an AFAB lesbian?
