Winter Dreams
She stood there, her nose and chin tucked away beneath the jacket to keep the bitter cold from nipping at her. Waiting for the other bridesmaid to start walking and join arms with her groomsmen. Not knowing who she was going to walk with she stepped forward, turned to look at who she’d be walking with and by surprise met was met with icy blues. His neon orange toque sitting on his blonde curls. They walked towards each other and joined arm; he mumbled something but for her all she heard was the sounds of being under water. She smiled beneath the jacket and continued down the aisle. Her heart raced beneath her green dress, her cheeks so Rosie heat radiated off them. Once they made their way up to the front of all the guests they continued to their perspective rows. His whole family was there. She hadn’t known they knew the bride and groom. His mom looked the same except her hair was done up in a ponytail. His dad still the same as before and she noticed his sister was focused on the love birds ahead. She needed space. After the exchanging of vows, the hoots and hollers of friend and family while the bride and groom kissed and sealed their fates together, she got up and started walking behind the venue. Snow covered the trees, the roads, bushes and every piece of greenery that once thrived in this little valley. It was beautiful. And cold. She tucked her frozen fingers into the pockets of her jacket and continued walking. People spread out everywhere, families meeting with their other halves, their friends, and even those they didn’t know. Chatter and laughter filled the wide-open space. She heard footsteps running up from behind her. Focusing on her feet and the snow below she refused to look up and meet his eyes. Her heart still racing. He slowed his pace to match hers and then he spoke. “I won the gold; the least that could happen is for you to win something too.” She stopped in her tracks and looked ahead, seeing him standing beside another groomsman and his date. “Nah, I don’t need anything.” Their eyes met and she turned around. His eyes watching her walk away.
