Project evaluation

I feel as though I executed my ideas for my ‘Distilled Non-alcoholic Drinks’ project fairly well. I decided I wanted to incorporate a lot of Scottish mythology as I was really interested in researching it and I wanted to make sure that it really felt like a Scottish drink.

I do like how I was able to tie together a more personal connection to the drink and a wider connection in how my dog was included on the final design as the main focus of Linlithgow’s history (the black bitch story). I was able to make this tie as Beecraigs is in Linlithgow and my dog is the reason for me travelling to Beecraigs so often.

I felt like I found myself rushing toward the end and feel like that is evident in my work so I definitely want to work on time management and not having such a tight schedule in future situations. I did also worry about readibility within my colour palette as the colours I went with were fairly pale and possibly hard to read against a white background? I did however feel like they worked best as I wanted to convey a more summery feeling and also the flavouring and colouring of the flowers the drinks are based on.

However I definitely did struggle with the name and I feel as though the one I settled on was still lacking slightly however it did tie in with my theme. I also think I could’ve been more thorough in my explanations and the ordering of my work as I fear that my line of thought may get a bit confusing to understand but overall am satisfied with the outcome.

Alan Kitching

Born in 1940, Alan Kitching is an English typographer known for his expensive use of wood and metal letterforms in commissions and etc. From a young age Alan was heavily interested in painting and grew up a lover of the arts in the 50s-60s.

His career changing over the years, Kitching began his own design practice with Colin Forbes in London. Since then he has partenered with many different people to pursue letter pressing and typography in the form of workshops, having taught at several places.

His work includes letter presses, prints and typography often including very witty statements/quotes. He enjoys playing with letter sizing and etc to make his work pop out at an audience.

Kitching is an artist who has made the letterpress his own and who continues to influence and inspire a new generation of graphic designers and letterpress enthusiasts across the world.

Morag Myerscough

Morag Myerscough was born in North London in 1963 where she grew up and studied art at both St. Martins and The Royal College of Art.

She spends time working with both big agencies and freelance. She started a company with Jane Chipchase, and has since continued on her own to run the company where she works in different areas such as architecture, art-based, product or experience design.

With her very bright and colourful style, she uses geometrical shape and colours that pop out of the page to create exciting, eyecatching designs.

Morag’s work is influenced by a wide variety of movements and styles. She loves the energy and radical, free expression that design had back in the 1960’s.

Paula Scher

Paula Scher is a popular contemporary American graphic designer. She has worked relentlessly to revolutionize the graphic designing industry with her overzealous determination and creative work for over four decades.

After gaining her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1970 studying at the Tyler School of Art in Pennsylvania, Paula Scher gained her first job as a layout artist for Random House’s children’s boom division in NYC.

She has worked at many places including CBS and Atlantic Records, before leaving to work on her own and to become an art educator for a lot of her life. She has certainly become an icon of the design industry and her work is recognisable throughout a lot of the world.

She was fascinated by her dad’s work as a child as he was an inventor, working with maps and etc. This inspired her as she thought how she could apply the filling of space to her work. She was also inspired by the 1930’s Art Nouveau movement and created a lot of very decorative work.

Stefan Sagmeister

Stefan Sagmeister is a typographer born in 1962 in Austria. He began his career at the young age of fifteen, when he started studying graphic design at Hochschule fuer Angewandte Kunst, Vienna, graduating in 1986. He also studied at the Pratt Institute in New York after winning a scholarship.

Since founding his own company and partnering with Jessica Walsh, he has designed album covers for several popular artists.

Sagmeister creates truly interesting work by morphing and disorienting images to create words of pictures. In a rather playful manner, a lot of his typography work includes things like food, trees and liquid shaped to his liking, cleverly depicting a design. Influenced most by Tibor Kalman, someone he heavily looked up to for several years of his life, admiring his passion and salesmanship.

Sagmeister prefers to dabble in several areas, switching from graphic design, typography, video etc. when inspiration strikes.

What 3 Words

flows, importance, typo

For this assignment, we were given three randomly generated words and a chosen location to create a mural using the app ‘What 3 Words’. My chosen location was a 3x3 meter square in a fountain area in Universal Studios. I chose this area because it is a vivid memory from my childhood. Using the Universal Studios logo as a template, I incorporated my 3 words into the mural design using Procreate. 

I feel as though the colourful recreation of the flow of water in a fountain wrapping around the earth accurately represents my first word, also included in the background in more muted colours. For ‘importance’ I made sure the earth stood out against the background by using softer, duller colours compared to the colourful image in the front, however, I feel as though I could’ve utilised this word a bit more and included perhaps a more clearly emphasised image. For my last word, I used a glitch effect to represent the ‘typo’ instead of including any kind of typography in my finished product. I definitely think I should’ve more clearly included ‘typo’ by somehow including rearranged versions of ‘Universal’ like I have in my development.

Overall, I am happy with the outcome although I believe I could’ve paid more attention to detail and perhaps cleaned it up a bit. In the future I will take these points into account to improve my work.

Maya Hayuk

Maya Hayuk is an American artist who creates murals, known for her bold geometric shapes and colour palettes.

The way the shapes and the paint begin to bleed into eachother with the gradient of the colours weaving through and overlapping eachother creates an incredibly interesting and exciting visual that is very attractive to the eye.

I really admire her ideas and her take on geometric shape with how the drips of colour allow the shapes to blend together slightly, I also love the vibrant bold colour palette, therefore her work is an inspiration to me as will be visible in my work.

Street - EXID

This was an album that I really enjoyed, and the incredibly creative album cover not only perfectly representing the album as a whole, but with references to different songs on the street signs too.

The fun colour scheme and shapes really sells the album and what listeners are in store for with the stylish perspective of a long, vibrant street.

An Awesome Wave - alt-J

The album artwork for An Awesome Wave is a multi-layered radar image of the Ganges river delta in Bangladesh and India. The image in each of the three layers was acquired by the European Space Agency's Envisat Earth-observing satellite, taken separately on 20 January 24 February and 31 March 2009. The overlaid image, titled Ganges' Dazzling Delta, exposes a multitude of colours arising from the variations in background radiation occurring between the three acquisition times.

Life In Cartoon Motion - MIKA

This album cover immediately attracts the eye with it’s very bright colours and characters, this design fits the fun, exciting sound of the songs. 

Looking closer into the cover, many small illustrations of random objects and characters can be seen, relating to certain songs on the album. For example, the little girl with the lollipop on the right represents the song ‘Lollipop’ on the album. This is a very clever design that adds to the fun, carefree and random feel MIKA was trying to achieve.

David Klein was an illustrator who specialised in mostly advertising, where his work was highly regarded and influential in the mid 1900s.

In the above examples, Klein effectively uses colour to make his detailed illustrations pop and to bring life to the poster with lots of bright and lively colours, immediately catching one's eye and drawing them into the poster, also possibly representing the busy city of New York and how it is bursting with life.

The contrasting colours of the second example emphasise the structure despite it being a background object as the bold blue tower stands out against the orange background.

‘Into the SpiderVerse’ (2018)

These special edition posters for ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ (2018) use complimentary pinks and blues to create a warm night light and the bright white of the moon creates an emphasis on Miles, therefore making him stand out among the rest of the characters and background.


In the bottom example the slight contrast of the bright green and slight reds puts emphasis on the characters as their red suits allow them to stand out against the background.

‘twentyonepilots’ (2009) 

The clever use of colour in twentyonepilots self-titled 2009 album cover by John Rettstatt represents creativity seeping out of one’s mind among their seemingly monotone surroundings.


The cover can be interpreted as many different things however I see it as the person’s thoughts bringing colour to the world around them due to the bright colours bringing life to the cover.

February, Vogue Japan (2018)

Kirsten Ulve is a NYC based illustrator who is known mainly for her vibrant fashion based art, where she mixes fun colours and shapes to create her bold illustrations. In the past, she has completed work for The New York Times, The Guardian, Vogue Japan, Billboard and many more. 

In ‘February, Vogue Japan’, Ulve combines many different shapes to create outlines of two women at a fashion event. She uses colour very effectively, even incorporating the background into the work, this makes for a very interesting and bold illustration from Ulve staying true to her unique style.

Financial Times Magazine (2017)

Aart-jan Venema is a Dutch illustrator. He works in both digital and traditional styles to create brightly coloured, multi-layered illustrations in which many lively scenes including lots of beautifully coloured characters. He has worked for clients such as the New York Times, Google, the Wallstreet Journal and the Guardian.

In this piece, Venema depicts the experience of trying chicken soup recipes from all over the world and adventuring around gathering ingredients as requested by his client. In the illustration, a very colourful scene can be seen full of people and life, effectively capturing the enjoyment that comes with trying food from different cultures.
