something that really interests me about Adoribull is a lot of fic features Bull helping Dorian deal with his internalized homophobia, and almost never digs into the meat of Bull being from a culture that is exponentially more homophobic than Dorian’s. and unlike Dorian, he doesn’t seem to have gotten to the mental stage of “hey it was fucked up that I was raised to think gay sex was selfish and shameful and I was expected to have reproductive sex I didn’t want with someone who was chosen for me”.

…I say, having not really gotten Into It in my fic either, because developing Bull into someone who could unpack that is a lot of work and I’m lazy

Going back to this because there’s something so crazy at the heart of Iron Bull/Dorian which is that Dorian’s big struggle is that he was raised as a true believer in the power structure of an empire. And it let him down by not living up to his ideals. And then he experienced this life altering trauma, where he was nearly forced into a brainwashing ritual that would turn him into a compliant enforcer of the status quo, never allowed romantic relationships, submitting to sex with a partner not of his choosing. And this horrified him so much that he ran.

And Iron Bull went through the exact same thing, except he turned himself in, he submitted to the brainwashing, it happened.

A lot of fic has Supportive Protective Boyfriend Bull going “fuck your shitty homophobic dad!” and while I believe he could feel that emotion, I suspect the way he’d express it would be much more complicated and fucked up.
