Camera down.

It’s hard to beat a sunny autumnal walk to clear the head. British summer time ended at 2am and with this in mind, I set out early to take advantage of the extra hour of morning light.

Met a couple of friends along the way. I even showed the horse the phone screen to see if I’d get a response. Yes I really did.

Yesterday I met a fine young Gentleman by the name of Thom Botwood. Thom is a British menswear designer with his studio based on the High street in Llantrisant. Walking around on a sunny midday I came across his premises and was attracted by the store window, I was taking a few pictures when the door opened and I was invited inside.

We talked for what seemed an hour whilst I shot a roll of film. The light entering the south facing window was hard to ignore, add to that the warm ambiance of his workspace and I was in no hurry to leave. Thom was happy to explain his work ethic where all his garments are hand made at his studio and the cloth sourced within the UK.

I should mention, that he doesn’t work alone, he has a companion named ‘Doug’.

        Showing interest in my photography and appreciated that I was using film I’ll be going back soon as I’d like to shoot some more there, besides there’s a nice coffee shop just around the corner. Seriously, I’m starting to get cabin fever. Or make that village fever. I won’t bore you with a weather report, suffice to say it’s rained every day for what seems an eternity. I’m not scared of getting wet but I tend to baby my cameras. They’ve lasted 30 years some of them, I don’t want to kill them with a downpour. Roll 6 -Devoid of people.

I’m fortunate to live 30 minutes from from either the mountains of Brecon or the coastline of South Wales. I needed a mental detox and I find the coastal air hard to beat.

Llantwit Major is a small town in the Vale of Glamorgan that overlooks the Bristol channel. Apart from the spectacular scenery, what I find so interesting is the light. Wait a few minutes and it can seem a different day. The photos below where taken within an hour but the light is so changeable it can appear days apart. I picked up an Olympus 35RC last year and haven’t spent much time with it. It was a cheap entry into rangefinders for me and they seem to have a good reputation. The big attraction was being able to shoot without a battery. Of course it can be used as a point and shoot provided you have a PX-625 or alternative. If you’re looking for a full mechanical manual camera that will get lost in your pocket, this is the one. More photos from this roll can be seen on my 52 Rolls project.

Recently I picked up a close to mint Canon New F-1 with a matching 50mm f1.4 lens for a lot less money than it was worth. I’ve wanted an F-1 longer than I can remember, and although I have an A-1 and T-90 I still longed for Canon’s jewel in the crown. Need to check the battery!

Need to check the battery!

I bought a Bronica ETRSi back last year but not spent much time with it. So I dusted it off, loaded some expired Portra 160NC…….but failed to check the battery. Shot the whole roll 2 stops under but I noticed before processing, so had the lab compensate. Note to-self, check the bloody battery…! Full roll can be seen at my project at 52 Rolls.
