Picks vs Fingers
Alright. I don't use this blog often. Only to occasionally complain about bass guitar problems and what not. But, I figured since I'm a bass guitarist in progress, I should throw my opinion out on this.
So before I started even playing Bass Guitar, I always heard the whole
"HURRHURR PICKS ARE FOR FAGGOTS THAT DON'T KNOW HOW TO PLAY RIGHT."
...Well....okay whatever. I played Saxophone at the time so it didn't apply to me. Now that I actually do play, you can easily relate this situation to other instruments. And for me, I can relate that to a saxophone. Usually. You play with the saxophone off to your dominant side. That's how you SHOULD play. But I played with it between my legs for comfort sake. And it really didn't matter, it's just a matter of preference.
Playing with your fingers or a pick isn't the same thing. Preference AND Sound come into play. Playing with a pick gives a different sound bass players. You might have to listen a bit harder, but there's a difference. Playing with a pick, fingers, or even slap is all just a matter of Preference and Sound.

I know someone's going to think that ^. I know they will. Let me tell you. I'm not a pick player. Why? Because I find it difficult. Yeah. That's right. For the last few months, I've used my fingers. Surprisingly enough, I thought playing with a pick would be easier. Some of my favorite bassists use a pick. I was all excited and then....it was difficult. Really difficult. I decided to pick this back up recently and well....it's still difficult.
TL;DR: There is no RIGHT was to play bass. I mean for god sakes, people in dubstep use a fucking ring to screw with their sound. Play how you want to play and if you're not a stuck up convoluted piece of shit, take a look at how other people play. Being a musician, an artist, is about doing what you love and EXPANDING upon it. Doing something NEW. Writing off someone's preferences or style as being "Wrong" just because it's not how your vision of the "correct" way is childish.
Now if you'll excuse me. I am actually going to continue trying to learn how to use a pick...and failing terribly at it.
