Summary: A young girl discovers a portal to another world in which she meets another her.
Uses: Another would be well-suited in an explorations of perspective, a study of wordless picturebooks, or even an illustrator study.
Notes: Robinson's wordless solo debut is packed full of story, meaning, and questions. In particular, the pages with many children and their other world twins provide much to explore visually.

Summary: Little Blue is separated from his iceberg parents and transforms into a cloud.
Uses: Blue Floats Away could be used to discuss the water cycle or climate change, especially for younger children.
Notes: The strength of this straightforward story is in its ability to make the topic engaging and accessible for young children, as well as in the textures of its cut-paper illustrations. An author's note explains the science and suggests actions to take.

Summary: Carmela makes a wish while running errands in town with her brother.
Uses: Carmela Full of Wishes could be used in an activity on wishes or to explore sibling relationships.
Notes: De la Peña's text captures the realistic dynamics of sibling relationships. Robinson's art cleverly uses papel picado to illustrate Carmela's wishes. As always, the strength in de la Peña and Robinson's collaboration is in infusing realistic or even mundane details and settings with great sparks of imagination and beauty that illuminate the entire story.

Summary: A summary of space for children in poems and paintings.
Uses: Comets, Stars, the Moon, and Mars would be useful in lessons on poetry or outer space.
Notes: Florian's highly-textured mixed media illustrations feature cut-outs, collage, and other features that appeal to the eye. When matched with brief, pleasant poems, the result is a book that makes the technicalities of outer space engaging for even the youngest readers. Though slightly older than is ideal for a science resource, Pluto is identified as a dwarf planet, so there is no glaring misinformation. A glossary and bibliography is included.

Notes: Translated from the Danish, this book takes an unflinching look at death, but does so in a way that is suitable for children, allowing them room to make sense of it for themselves. The pencil and paint illustrations are filled with comfort and tenderness.

Notes: Sidman's pleasant poems are accompanied by brief frog facts and the backmatter includes even more information. The incorporation of a friend character in text and illustrations provides emotional resonance regarding moving.

Notes: Translated from the Japanese, this book beautifully evokes the experience of camping beneath an open sky. Both text and illustrations utilize the senses to create a visceral experience for readers.

Summary: The true story of the real bear who was the inspiration behind Winnie-the-Pooh.
Uses: Finding Winnie could be useful in discussions of WWI, bears, or Winnie-the-Pooh.
Notes: Blackall's Caldecott-winning illustrations are gentle and endearing. Mattick's text builds up to a rewarding connection between author and bear. Relevant photos and captions are included at the end of the story.

Notes: Copeland's poetic narration includes her own voice as well as the voice of the young girl, distinguished by different fonts. Myers distinct collage and paint illustrations lend themselves to the focus on imagination and dreams. A photograph and letter to the reader is included.

Uses: First the Egg could be used to explore metamorphosis or similar processes with young children. It could also be used for light-hearted social-emotional learning on concepts like patience.
Notes: Clever cutouts are achieved with well-positioned painterly illustrations and minimal, but thoughtful, text. The overall effect is deceptively simple and inspiring.
