Euphoria || Mike and Star

A short burst of bright laughter was knocked out of him at her answer, the awkwardness almost tangible. Only he didnât find it off putting or cringy, well okay maybe a little bit but not enough to scare him off. For the most part he found it comforting to know that he wasnât alone in his reaction to their situation. They were in the same boat and he was beginning to think that maybe he didnât have to feel so nervous about seeing her in real life. MaybeâŠ.well maybe she would like him in this reality, too.Â
It was a lot to ask for, he knew, but he did. Every time. After all the rejections and years of being alone, it never stopped him from trying.Â
âSounds like a plan. Ten-four, good buddy,â he said, pausing on his packing to pull the receiver back into his hand so he could looked down at himself. â Iâll meet you in front of the main building. Iâm uh- Iâm wearing a blue shirt. Black tie. Well, the tag called it charcoal, but-. Wait, what am I saying? You already know what I look like.âÂ
He scoffed at himself, and zipped his backpack closed, pulling it up onto one of his shoulders.Â
âBe safe! Look both ways when you cross the street, and uhâŠâ he looked around his office, searching for anything else he might have to say. âI guess Iâll see you soon.â He smiled, nodded. Good. Okay. âAlright. Hanging up now.âÂ
He placed the phone back and exited his office, locking the door behind him. Taking his time, he followed his usual path out of the university and only diverged until he was at the entrance. Mike stayed standing, too full of nervous energy to sit, eyes following any figure that moved in the hopes that one of them would be his anticipated guest.Â
As soon as she put the phone back on the receiver, Star pulled out her cell. The perfectly good cell phone that she could have used just now to call him instead of the pay phone. Shaking her head at her idiocy, she entered the number for Mike she had called into her contacts. Making a mental note to take a picture for the entry once they made it to Hatterâs. Star shoved her phone back into her pocket and bounded off for the university.Â
An awkward smile leaped upon her face as she ran rather than walked down the street. Her leaps and bounds more of a skip down the street rather than a walk or run. Wind blowing through the long strands of her hair as it billowed behind her. Star was finally getting a hold on her life and it started with meeting the one person who managed to keep her grounded through traumatic events. Something of which had not happened since she first came to Earth. Only her best friend had been able to do this so maybe this was a sign that her life was truly starting over.
Finally, she stopped with hands on her thighs as she bent over to catch her breath. Perhaps she was in need of an exercise routine now. Star looked up at the looming building just a block ahead. Breaking into a full run now, she bolted for the front doors. Noticing the figure standing in the entrance. Star didnât even bother to stop and check to see if it had been who she was rushing for. Wrapping her arms around his neck and burying her face in his torso. A smile that could nearly split her face in half emerging on her petite features.
âI really hope that this is you, Mike,â she said, voice muffled by his body, âOr this is about to get really, really awkward.âÂ
