“I was thinking as a specialist and not as a human being, and was so specialised in my job as architect that I forgot that humanity is the most important thing.”
—
Albert Speer
PODCAST: SPEER IN QATAR OR: HOW ARCHITECTS STOPPED CARING AND LEARNED TO LOVE THE CLIENT (2019)
The above quote was part of ‘Hitler’s architect’ Speer’s post-war campaign to distance himself from Nazi activities, many of which he was later proven to have been complicit in. This podcast uses him as an extreme example of a still-prevalent phenomena: the architect who is happy to condone a client’s questionable ethics in return for a big commission. Conveniently for the discussion, one such architect is the late son of Speer himself, who advocated sustainability throughout his career, but whose stadium proposal was instrumental in the 2020 World Cup award to Qatar, a country whose long-held notoriety for worker’s rights violations has grown throughout the project. The podcast asks us to consider whether star architects have a responsibility to use their influence with clients to insist on more humane practices, and also how regular ‘jobbing’ architects, with considerably less pull, might find ways together to make our ethical objections heard.
