you look at my pictures.
you write songs with my name in them.
you stare at me across halls and through brick walls.
it’s almost as if…
you’re in love with me!
i am beginning to wonder…
why you didn’t love me like this when we were still together?

you look at my pictures.
you write songs with my name in them.
you stare at me across halls and through brick walls.
it’s almost as if…
you’re in love with me!
i am beginning to wonder…
why you didn’t love me like this when we were still together?
dad.
the silence we share is uncomfortable.
the weight of words never said fills the air.
the pain of the spoken words strike my ribs like a sharp sword.
why did you bring me into this world just to hate me?
why did you choose me just to be disappointed in my creation?
you loved me when i was small enough to be pushed down slides and carried up hills.
now, with my own legs, i walk alone.
does the river stone sheltered in your pocket as a memory,
remember where it came from?
does it want to go back?
i love my body!
the lumps and the bumps.
i love my body!
the hips and the dips.
i love my body!
i look just like my mom looked
when she was my age and was full of all her rage,
swimming in fountains and smoking in mountains.
oh
i love my body!
because of the way she kisses it.
i love my body!
because of the way i’d miss it.
if i were smaller and prettier to the world,
i wouldn’t feel as much like a girl,
with long dresses and ribbons in my hair,
i’ll stop pretending like the world is in any way fair.
i love my body!
from my head to my toes.
i love my body!
because everyone knows,
when i’m coming down the hallway from the sound of my feet, gracing the floor, and dancing in streets.
i love my body!
i love the way it bends.
like a river meeting ever reaching ends.
i love my body!
i love how it sings.
like a bird gliding on the wind with soft fairy wings.
and perhaps i shouldn’t love it.
perhaps i should scorn.
but instead i’ll dance, and i’ll sing instead of mourn.
and maybe i’d be better off miserable like you say,
but i’d rather be happy with how i am, right now, today.
guardian angel
i think my dog is an angel at my feet.
watching my footsteps and watching me sleep.
she never makes any noise or any fuss.
but i think she’s there covered in layers of angel dust.
maybe she talks to my cat to make sure i’m okay.
maybe she is waiting at the end of every doorway.
i know because when i’m sad i swear i could sense her, she looks the same but with less grey fur.
and perhaps one day my cat will join her too.
then i’ll have eight pairs of paws to watch me watch the moon.
i’m begging you not to die because if you do, i think i’ll go with you.
living without you would be like living without my lungs: impossible, painful, and lonely.
my dog was about to be killed by the state for being too aggressive.
then, we taught her what it was liked to be loved.
now she sleeps underneath covers at night in between the babies.
she hides in the closet during thunderstorms because they remind her of you.
animals aren’t born to hurt. they are made to fear.
begging you never changed what you did,
even though my knees are still sore.
you didn’t make the rain go away,
but you did hold the umbrella over my head so i could bare it.
i’m so lonely sometimes i feel like i might drown.
i like to imagine my loneliness is a yellow ribbon tying itself to my lower ribs. the ribbon tugs on my bones whenever i feel the silence creep in.
when will i stop mourning the pain?
you are my other half.
without you, i am like the flower without her petals.
i am a clock with only seconds.
i am dark without the light.
i am rain droplets falling from an absent cloud.
i am me without you.
if true love exists, you are mine.
sometimes i talk to the live oak tree in the yard. we have very interesting conversations.
i ask about all the things she’s seen over her many years. she answers in hanging wind chimes and dusty moss.
if hell is for all the other people like me, then send me straight down so i can kiss the love of my life in peace.
how special it is that i was made for you
let me show you how gentle and perfect you are with just my touch
