“Don’t say that. It’s always easier to just do nothing. Newton’s Second Law and all that - or is it his third? Been too long since high school,” he joked, listening to her. When she mentioned her name, gears in his brain clicked - perhaps it had been part of the reason he had been interested in speaking with her, a vague recognition he hadn’t dwelt on. But his specialty was cold cases, so he had never had a reason to look into it too much. “Oh. I see. That…makes sense.” He paused, the slightest of beats. “It’s a pleasure.”
“Trust me, sometimes doing nothing is more difficult. Newton be damned. He didn’t account for the fact the mind can eat a person alive when they’re at rest.” A lot of Emerson’s personal truth lay in that one sentence, but thankfully Marcus didn’t know that. “Keep talking like that and people will think I’m pleasant or something. But for the sake of honesty, I’m glad it didn’t click for you til now. You wouldn’t believe the amount of people who talk to me because I was the lone survivor of a massacre. It’s nice when someone doesn’t.”
