Adamant is the story of what happens when sassy gods meet sassy teenagers.
Kate Smyth was getting along, she was doing fine. Her mom was dead, but lots of people’s parents are dead. Her father had mysteriously vanished when she was 10, but lots of people’s fathers mysteriously vanish when they’re 10.
But an unfortunate hair-dyeing incident is just the first of Kate’s problems, as people vanish from all over the Pacific Northwest. A party connects Kate with the shadowy Erebus and the easy-breezy West, who may be more godly than they let on at first glance.
Teenager-eating sea monsters are fought, people are sassy, and demons are confronted as Kate begins a journey that will reconnect her with her father, introduce her to a gorgon, and put her in the path of two of the oldest gods of the Greek pantheon.
"First dead parents, then caves full of bats, then caped crusading."
Let me start off by saying that I'm a HUGE mythology fan/lover/addict. As such, I have to admit that when it comes to YA novels, it's not easy to find good mythology novels. But this book is amazing! I have read this book so many times and I've only had it since June! The first time I read it, I read it in four hours. When I finished, I immediately started it again. Then I made my cousin read it, and I read it to my little sister. And those are just a few times.
I've started and edited this review a million five times because I can never not gush about it and my reviews always end up being gush fests. But what can I say? I loved it! I loved the characters, especially Kate. She's definitely a bad-ass, and what girls should aspire to be.
Kate, the main character, is a regular teenage girl who is thrust into the world of greek gods. She has to learn how to fight an evil that most people (and gods) wouldn't know how to deal with. She's very smart, has great friends - except Neil, and grandparents who love her. I found her very relate-able, which is why I think girls everywhere could look up to her.
I did find Neil, one of her friends, annoying but it was to be expected because he was grief-stricken. I probably would have been the same way, though I would hope to be more like Kate. That being said, I loved that all of the characters where well rounded, and that they evolved throughout the story.
Overall, this novel is great, and definitely not something you expect from a self-published author. It's the first out of many self-published books that I've liked. And not only did I like it, I loved it. Everything about this is great.
Basically all the characters
There were a couple of of's that should have been off's and but other than that not many grammar or spelling mistakes.
The scene with Ganymede - I didn't really get it, and I hope it's just an introductory scene for something in the next book.
Tumblr talk. One of the main rules about tumblr is to not speak of tumblr outside of tumblr and Kate is addicted to tumblr! Ok, so this really isnt something I disliked, I just had to mention it.
This was a great book! Especially considering it was a debut novel. It seemed really good and it definitely didn't disappoint me. I most definitely recommend it to anyone who likes mythology, bad-ass main characters and YA books.
5/5 - I loved it! I definitely recommend it.
