He looked at the screens around the console, sighing. He turned one around towards Mary, showing it to her. "If there's one thing you never, not if you want to survive, ever put in a trap, it's me. If they haven't learnt by now, not to do suck a thing, then they ought to run. They ought to run so far." The Doctor scowled. "That is Gallifrey. I just can't see them yet. For the last four hundred years of my life, I thought I'd murdered them all." He walked around Mary, and reopened the doors to the TARDIS and looked out. It was beautiful. He couldn't deny that.

Everyone is wondering why capaldi’s doctor cant fly the Tardis, seriously did you even watch doctor who? Every doctor after regenerating becomes unstable often including memory loss, Paul McGann’s doctor literally forgot he was a time lord.
The Third Doctor passed out for days, waking up only to violently cuddle his shoes, and then made a wild escape on a wheelchair.

"It’s….wow….yeah….wow." She stammers, looking around. She moved over to the console. "What do all these things do?"
He tapped her hands away gently. "Don't touch!" He waggled a finger in her direction. "Control the TARDIS - When and where we go!"
A Familiar Face || The Doctor and Mary
The TARDIS finally seemed to stop shaking, and making so much noise, which gave the Doctor a chance to calm down a little. They must have landed. “It’s what she likes to be called! Doesn’t yours have a name?” He came and had a look at the screen closest to Mary. It would not say where they had landed. The Doctor turned to her properly,giving her a smile. “Come on then!” Where could he have been needed that he just had to go there?
They landed with a bit of a thump, and Mary grabbed onto the console for support. Thank goodness that was over; but where had they gone? From what she had seen, the Doctor hadn’t inputed any coordinates or directions. In fact, he hadn’t even flipped a switch before they started moving. “I suppose I’ve never thought of mine having a name.” She replied, slowly making her way to the door. Once she reached it, her hand extended carefully to push it open ever so slightly, and she stuck her head out. When she saw what was outside, she nearly fell on the floor. “Doctor? I… I think you need to see this.”

"I spent four hundred years thinking I killed them. Four hundred! Do you think I'm ready to see them again? After all that time? Do you?"
