review: dollar snack club
My favorite! (and only!) snack box. Dollar Snack Club lured me in with their $1 monthly (okay, actually $5 because S/H) price, but I’m consistently surprised and confused that I don’t see this box featured or mentioned ANYWHERE.
So, okay, here’s the deal.
5-6 snacks / month for $5 total, but there’s a catch. Two catches, maybe.
First of all, you can’t personalize the box at all, which might be a problem if I had any serious allergies, but as stands anything I don’t like or can’t eat (there was a box with a caffeine-infused energy bar, which would surely just give me all the jitters) I just give away.
Secondly, to keep the low price, you have to fill out a monthly survey and review the snacks. Not an issue for me; clearly I love spewing out my opinions, but some may not love it, and I wonder if that’s the reason I don’t see it featured anywhere else.
But I love this one. A couple months after signing up, SnackNation emailed and offered their “Artisan” box (more snacks, higher quality brands, I guess) for $3 more, so I now pay a grand total of $8 for 8 snacks. I literally can’t beat it. Most months there are at least one or two snacks I love, and many of the others fall under the category of “pretty good,” with maybe one or two I’m not a fan of. I’ve discovered new brands and snacks through this subscription, and someday I’ll actually shell out the cash to buy these snacks for real.
The best finds so far?
Liege Waffle - Belgian Boys
Mango Coconut Noka Superfood Smoothie
ZeeZee’s Strawberry Grahamz
...and some delicious toffee candy that I don’t remember the name or brand of. Way to go, self.
My one negative as far as this box goes is that there are usually one or two (sometimes three!!) bars in there, and I -- can’t emphasize this enough -- DO NOT LIKE BARS. Give me a candy bar or give me LITERALLY ANY OTHER SNACK. But like, that’s not a huge deal.
Bottom line: I love this box. I’m so psyched for it every month.
let’s pretend you asked...
Let’s pretend like somebody asked me about all my experience with subscription boxes, even though NOBODY EVER HAS.
I heard of Blue Apron and NatureBox and who knows what else when I was obsessively listening to the Gilmore Guys podcast years ago, but didn’t have the interest or funds to try out (or research, really) any of it. FF a couple of years and here I am, writing a blog about all my damn thoughts about subscription boxes.
To be clear, I’ve never tried Blue Apron (or Hello Fresh, or any of that), or NatureBox. (I do subscribe to a different snack box, but more on that later...) My coworker and her family do Blue Apron, which she really likes but admits (a) is expensive and, (b) takes TIME. Money and time are two things I don’t have a lot of.
Here’s what I like: getting mail, being surprised (I *hate* spoilers like nobody you’ve ever met), and having something to look forward to.
Enter, subscription boxes. Literally paying someone to surprise me on a regular basis.
Here we go.
