I read so many of your Brittana stories many years ago and I reread some of them last night and had such happy nostalgic feelings.. its okay if you don’t want to but would you consider writing one last oneshot/fill? We will never have a glee reunion for obvious reasons and i would love to know what yours would look like please

I’ve had four Glee/Brittana requests recently. I originally started writing ten years ago because I was such a huge stan of the show. I wanted to write a last little drabble for old time’s sake, I wasn’t sure how to do that respectfully or tactfully so I put it off, but here it is for those who have asked. This will be the last time, and it’s been a cathartic tiny pleasure writing it. Thanks for your prompt.

The Glee Reunion That Will Never Happen But If It Did...

There is a strange kind of vacancy in her eyes, as though something has happened and yet she and everyone are pretending the contrary.

Jokes are cracked about the old times, everyone laughs, but Brittany is a tiny beat behind, out of sync but still following the general rhythm of the conversation, as though she is both here and somewhere else entirely.

It’s whispered about between the others at the restaurant over the course of the meal, noticed but still too early in the evening for anyone to be tipsy enough to pry with Brittany directly about her polite silence.

In some tiny way they will all always be best friends, always be the National champions who brought that gleaming trophy home despite the odds, but… time moves on. It’s been ten years according to the reunion invitation, it doesn’t feel like ten years at all.

They have moved to different cities, grown in their careers, got married —  and in Tina’s case also got divorced, twice — and dramatic confrontations are not the polite business of somewhat put-together twenty-somethings doing their best impression of successful adults. So Brittany laughs a beat behind, politely sips her drink and doesn’t say much at all, and nobody asks questions despite the obvious missing person at the table.

Brittany almost fades into the background as everyone goes around recounting the last ten years of their life. When it gets to Sam, who is sitting beside her, she politely takes her empty glass and makes a move for the bar. Everyone notices, only one person follows.

“So.” Sue Sylvester saddles beside her, gleaning her up and down with a knowing look. “You’ve been awfully quiet tonight…”

“I’m not a fan of reunions,” Brittany frowns slightly but then manages a small smile. “Reunions are just prolonged goodbyes with people you love but are too busy to stay in touch with, and that’s kinda sad. I don’t like goodbyes.”

“Me neither Kiddo,” Sue commiserates, lifting two fingers at the bartender for a round of drinks. “How’s Santana? Is she a high-flying corporate lawyer or a no-nonsense divorce attorney with perfect hair and a power-lesbian suit to boot?” Sue smirks.

Brittany’s eyes light up like her wife’s name is the first interesting thing somebody has uttered all night. She pushes a slow, beaming smile that seems to last an eternity. It makes Sue smile too. The bartender brings their drinks, Brittany rolls her gaze to her glass and finally speaks.

“Well for a start I’m pretty sure she has not aged a single day.” Brittany’s lips perse funnily, unsure how to give the abridged version of the last ten years with that stunning, immaculate, giant-hearted wonderful woman. “She would be here but… work calls. Santana Lopez, human-rights lawyer, fighting for everyone’s rights like a superhero. It’s a pretty good reason to miss a high-school reunion…”

“And what about you, Brittany Pierce-Lopez, what have you been up to these last few years?” Sue sips her drink and sighs. “Or do I call you Doctor Pierce-Lopez now, or maybe Professor Pierce-Lopez?” She lifts a brow, impressed with the quantum mathematician teaching at MIT.

Brittany smiles. “Professor Pierce-Lopez is our guinea pig’s name,” she says, almost disapprovingly as though the nomenclature makes her sound older than she wants to be. “The kids at school call me Doctor Brittany but... the kids at home? They just call me Mom.”

Sue’s eyes light up.

“You and Santana have children?” Sue laughs in disbelief.

“Two,” Brittany smiles. “A boy and a girl. We named our daughter after someone really, really important to us…”

“Oh, is that so. What’s your daughter’s name?” Sue asks.

“Sue,” Brittany says it so quietly that Sue does a double take.

“Really?”

“No, I’m just kidding.” Brittany laughs. “We called her Emily — we’re big Pretty Little Liars fans.”

“Well who isn’t.” Sue jokes. Brittany’s phone rings from on top of the bar, interrupting the conversation. “I’ll let you get that, another drink later on?” Sue suggests.

“Of course,” Brittany bids her goodbye. She looks at her phone, smiling when she sees the name. “Hey you…”

Sue turns to say something, she forgets what it is. Brittany stands there with a beaming grin, nodding into the receiver of her phone, unaware she’s being watched.

“It’s nice, it’s fine. It’s not the same without you here but nobody’s mad at you about that.” Brittany pauses, grinning at something her wife is saying. “I miss you too, I love you babe.”

What was so bad about Glee?

I have to say first that I arrived to the Glee fandom just after the show ended, that means: I binged watched that shit on just two weeks. And after reading old disputes and battles between fans, fans and writers, writers and writes and everybody against everybody, I think the worst about Glee was the lost potential. 

It was fantastic at first: not just another high school drama, with the nerds and the populars as black and white -opposite- characters. Every single one of them had something to say, something to struggle with. They were-mostly-well written, well played, and the different stories and arks had sense and cohesion. That went to shit, for me, after the Santana outing. That could have been a fantastic opportunity to explore the struggle Santana faced, the consequences someone as cruel as Finn on that moment should have faced, how that was a ginormous setback for her, the reppercusions all that had on Brittana as a couple, and a fucking fantastic opportunity to let Brittany voice her feelings, seriously and maturely, about something.

That is another bad point for Glee to me: Brittany. Brittany is the worst treated character on all the seasons, just because it was easier let her stay on her dumb slut façade. She was hilarious, she was an easy resource to resolve any plot situation and it was low maintenance: just a blank look and a midly good punch line, and that’s it. You know what? That’s not fair, to the character nor the interactions with other characters and her development. 

Once read an article with a sentence that stuck with me, because it summarizes what I think about all the potential Brittany had, and writers and producers decided not to exploit: If Brittany would have been writen half as good as in fanfiction, Heather Morris would have won three Emmys already. And it’s true. 

Also, I’ll add something more about this, quoting one of the best writen, cohesive and realistic Brittana stories, with the most coherent character development; that should have been canon, as I’ve said more than one time: @leigh-kelly‘s Beautiful Life:

“When I was in high school, people thought I was really dumb, and I really played it up a lot, because sometimes it made it easier to deal with all the nasty crap around me. But I still heard what they said, that I was a dumb slut, that I was confused…I know Santana has told you all that Lima wasn’t a kind place for queer people, and in my case, they didn’t even give me the benefit of believing that I actually was. […] Sometimes I think it would be easier to just tell people what they want to hear, that I’m a lesbian, but then I think, this isn’t for them to feel comfortable with, it’s for me, and that erases part of my identity. -Brittany (Beautiful Life, Chapter 52).

This is a good example for what a character with the development as Brittany should have had, as a closure. Instead? Well… we all watched the show.

Related to this (and I promise is the last Brittana related complain xDD), the Brittana relationship. I’m actually grateful, because the show could have done a lot more damage to this couple, and they ended pretty well; but that doesn’t mean that they didn’t deserved better: we all know that Brittana started because Naya fucking Rivera and Heather fucking Morris developed the most realistic interaction I’ve ever seen, and had an amazing chemistry between them. That said. Me, as a writer, can’t think on a single reason on Earth to NOT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT! It’s a waste of talent!! And I don’t mean just writing them as a lovey dovey couple (that was all HeYa, anyway, fucking writers didn’t have to do anything with background moments), I mean to take advantage of that rare, unbelievable chemistry to build a REALISTIC RELATIONSHIP between two women. You know how hard it is, how we LGTBI+ people had suffered years of straight couples on screen, and just the few funny, hilarious, not serious gay characters having affairs, awkward as hell kisses and forced hugs. With one of them cheating or dead, if I may add. Brittana is one of the few exceptions to that: a natural, normal and quite well played relationship between two women, being just that: two women that love each other, as any another human being. They were the most queer regular couple I found, and for that I’ll be eternally grateful. 

Apart from all the Brittana stuff, anon (sorry for the rambling xDD), I think another thing Glee fucked up was Troubletones. Another waste of talent, in favor of remarking (once again) the fucking awesomeness Rachel Berry was. 

Rachel Berry, and her evolution to little miss ambitious thing to fucking wicked, manipulative bitch. She had a dream, she reached it, she saw that someone else, who actually cared for her, tried to make it on her own, and she throw a fit. Rachel Berry needs to learn to share her toys. And after that what? She leaves her dream because she suddenly wants to make a TV show… Are you fucking serious????

I don’t want for you to get bored, anon, so we will summarize now: Glee was a fucking mess because it started great, continued regular and ended being a freaking parody of itself, waisting talent and leaving plots incomplete and lacking any kind of sense. 

And that’s what you missed on Glee.

Getaway Car: The Last Swiftgron Song

No, nothing good starts in a getaway car… [VERSE 1] It was the best of times, the worst of crimes this line - is a reference to dickens “best of times, worst of times” opening of tale of two cities v famous, we all know this, been told many times - is a set up for the rest of the story being told - is a clear indelible link to other songs about Dianna, e.g. Wonderland’s “life was never worse, but never better” literally from the very first line, this is a song about Dianna Agron. I struck a match and blew your mind But I didn’t mean it And you didn’t see it personally - and keep in mind there’s nothing but circumstantial evidence to support this theory - I think Taylor used to discuss the possibility of coming out with Dianna.   - Dianna was notably not keen to stay closeted (see: the infamous “Likes Girls” shirt incident). - the girls were pretty daring/open (see: the late night Meredith photo, the “little kitten who needs to nurse” note and its clear reference in Holy Ground, Dianna being constantly around when Taylor was “dating” both Connor and Harry, the Tim Tebow debacle) with their relationship - Dianna was Taylor’s first serious relationship since Emily (Taymily break up was late 2007, I think? and Swiftgron started around 2010/11, but was pretty casual until at least mid to late 2011) My personal theory is that Taylor brought up how nice it would be to come out, to not be closeted any longer; and Dianna took that possibility and ran with it.  Taylor was unable to articulate her anxieties with coming out at that point in time, so she let Dianna believe that it was a mutual goal.  She “didn’t mean it” and Dianna “didn’t see” that she wasn’t serious about it. The ties were black, the lies were white In shades of gray and candlelightAt the time, Taylor felt that her lie - saying she genuinely wanted to come out when she wasn’t actually sure about it - was a white lie.  It’s not like the girls were actually going to do anything about it, right?  Dianna had her career to think about too, and they kept breaking up, seeing other people - it didn’t feel like a big deal to keep up the lie. I wanted to leave him I needed a reason The “him” mentioned in the song is pretty ambiguous, but I think there’s two solid possibilities. - “him” being Taylor’s PR at the time, Paula, who was employed by the label and more concerned with keeping Taylor closeted than keeping her happy - “him” being a general catch all for her beards Or hell, it could be both, Taylor’s prone to that sort of thing. [PRE-CHORUS 1] X marks the spot, where we fell apart He poisoned the well, I was lying to myself I knew it from the first old fashioned, we were cursed We never had a shotgun shot in the dark “He” being Taylor’s PR is most likely in this verse.  "the well" is Taylor’s mind - her PR made her believe that the only way to keep her career was to stay closeted indefinitely.   This pre-chorus is all about hindsight.  The verses are about how Taylor was thinking and feeling in the moment, the prechorus is her looking back on that and knowing the truth. “I was lying to myself” - contrary to the white lies mentioned in the verse, it wasn’t harmless to let Dianna believe in something Taylor had no intention of ever doing “we were cursed” - their relationship was never going to last, based as it was on such shaky foundations and with Taylor torn between Dianna’s wants and needs, her PR/record label’s machinations, and Taylor’s own desires. [CHORUS] You were driving the getaway car We were flying, but we’d never get far “his love was like driving a new Maserati down a dead end street” - just saying There are frequent references to driving and cars in other songs about Dianna, but more importantly, Dianna was “driving” the potential for coming out together. “we were flying” - we were happy, blissfully so “but we’d never get far” - before we fought, broke up, were separated by our careers, etc etc. Don’t pretend it’s such a mystery Think about the place where you first met me I saw one poster not long after Rep came out speculating that “the place where you first met me” refers to Nashville itself - Dianna should’ve known that Taylor would never be able to follow through, coming from/having her career based in a place like that We’re riding in a getaway car There were sirens in the beat of your heart I love this imagery.  Referring to the fact that Dianna herself was a danger to Taylor?? who knows this isn’t super important for the overall narrative of the song Should’ve known I’d be the first to leave Think about the place where you first met me In a getaway car These lyrics are cleverly placed so that “the place where you first met me” is heavily implied to be IN the getaway car, i.e. this relationship was nothing but an escapist fantasy and you should’ve known that because my PREVIOUS relationship - which I was in when we met - was also an escapist fantasy. Personally I think she did that so it’s easy to point and say this song is about Hiddleswift when primarily, it’s about Swiftgron. No, they never get far No, nothing good starts in a getaway car The “getaway car” can be interpreted as a rebound relationship - that’s how Taylor writes all of her songs, basically, so that they can be interpreted as being about her heterosexual public persona or about her actual life.  But really, the “getaway car” is about escapism.  No relationship built on a foundation of “wouldn’t it be great if our lives were completely different” can last!  What Taylor has now with Karlie, that was built by the two of them on the lives they were actually living at the time, not on the promise of a hypothetical future. [VERSE 2] It was the great escape, the prison break The light of freedom on my face Refers to the engagement, I’m quite sure.  This was It - this was the moment when Dianna put all her cards on the table and declared she was willing if Taylor was willing. But you weren’t thinking And I was just drinking Note that now, several years after that engagement, Dianna is in a lavender marriage.  "you weren’t thinking" about the consequences, about what it really means to come out as a lesbian in this day and age, “and I was just drinking”, i.e. refusing to do anything, so paralysed by indecision that all she could do was drink. Well he was running after us, I was screaming ‘Go go go!’ “He” is once again more likely to be Taylor’s PR, trying to convince her not to come out, to break off the engagement, to ditch Dianna altogether. But with three of us, honey, it’s a side show And a circus ain’t a love story And now we’re both sorry (we’re both sorry) Taylor had to make a choice - her label/PR meddling with the relationship is the “circus”, and (as I mentioned before) no relationship could last when Taylor was torn between all three parties (herself, Dianna, and her label). In the end, of course (spoiler alert!!) Taylor chose to break it off with Dianna, “and now we’re both sorry”. [PRE-CHORUS 2] X marks the spot, where we fell apart He poisoned the well, every man for himself Personally I LOVE this particular line.  "Every man for himself" throws doubt on the gender of every party mentioned in this song!  I’m very aware that it’s an idiom, and trying to change it to “every woman for herself” would throw off the beat of the song.  The thing is, Taylor doesn’t do anything without purpose, and always chooses her words very carefully - she could’ve left this line exactly as it is in the first pre chorus, and no one would’ve known. But she chose to say “every man for himself” when we all know that at least one party in this situation - Taylor herself - is not a man.  Which leads to the thought - whom else in this song is being referred to as male when they’re not? Hell, whom else on this album is being referred to as male when they’re not? I knew it from the first old fashioned, we were cursed It hit you like a shotgun shot to the heart Taylor made a decision, and she didn’t choose Dianna, and that broke her heart. [CHORUS] You were driving the getaway car We were flying, but we’d never get far Don’t pretend it’s such a mystery Think about the place where you first met me We’re riding in a getaway car There were sirens in the beat of your heart Should’ve known I’d be the first to leave Think about the place where you first met me In a getaway car No, they never get far No, nothing good starts in a getaway car [BRIDGE] We were jet set Bonnie and Clyde Until I switched to the other side “The other side” here being her record label.  Taylor chose to break up with Dianna and stay closeted rather than live out their dream - after all, she’d been lying about that dream from the start. It’s no surprise, I turned you in 'Cause us traitors never win This is one of the most telling lines of the whole song, to be frank.  "Us traitors"; Taylor is the traitor who turned her lover in.  But in doing so, she lost by her own admission.  What did she lose?  Well, obviously her lover.  But if the song’s about a rebound relationship, i.e. Hiddleswift, and we all know Hiddleswift was fake - Well.  There’s no way Getaway Car is about a beard, that’s for sure. I’m in a getaway car I left you in the motel bar I put the money in a bag and stole the keys That was the last time you ever saw me “I put the money in a bag” - Taylor chose her career, and it paid off for her BIG TIME.  1989 was her most popular album yet.  She skyrocketed up the charts.  She hired Tree and turned her public image around (for a couple years at least).  But to do so, she left Dianna behind, and “stole the keys” to the getaway car - which is now hers to use when she sees fit. [CHORUS] Driving the getaway car We were flying, but we’d never get far Don’t pretend it’s such a mystery Think about the place where you first met me We’re riding in a getaway car There were sirens in the beat of your heart Should’ve known I’d be the first to leave Think about the place where you first met me In a getaway car No, they never get far No, nothing good starts in a getaway car [OUTRO] I was riding in a getaway car I was crying in a getaway car I was dying in a getaway car Said 'goodbye’ in a getaway car I was riding in a getaway car I was crying in a getaway car I was dying in a getaway car Said 'goodbye’ in a getaway car How anyone can listen to the emotion in Taylor’s voice when she sings these lines and honestly think it’s about a beard is beyond me. To be clear - I do not think Taylor is still in love with Dianna, nor Dianna still in love with Taylor.  I think they had a passionate, not particularly healthy relationship which ended in a way that prevented either one of them from getting closure.   I do think this song is the last one that Taylor will write about Dianna.  This is Taylor’s closure on that relationship.  She’s letting it go.  And that’s wonderful.
