I’m afraid I can’t explain myself…Because I am not myself, you see?
Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (via wordsnquotes)
Celebrating Lewis Carroll’s 184 Birthday with the Original ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ Illustrations
“I’m not strange, weird, off, nor crazy, my reality is just different from yours.”
“But it’s no use now, to pretend to be two people! Why there’s hardly enough of me left to make one respectable person!”
“Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”
“I’m afraid I can’t explain myself…Because I am not myself, you see?”
“How long is forever? Sometimes, just one second.”
“She generally gave herself very good advice, (though she very seldom followed it).”
In honor of Lewis Carroll’s birthday, we have dug up these charming recreations of his original illustrations for the classic children’s fairytale Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Spanish shop PRRINT composes vintage prints with a contemporary sensibility on up-cycled old dictionary book pages. He has transferred Carroll’s sketches from the first manuscript into dictionary print paper. The Victorian images are beautifully complemented with the sepia tone paper, which intensifies its vintage allure.
“Little Alice fell d o w n the hOle, bumped her head and bruised her soul..”
Originally composed in black ink, dashes color are given to the psychedelic fairytale, which coincides with its whimsical prose. Alice’s signature blue dress, blonde tresses, and the purple Cheshire Cat are revived through carefully calculated pops of their designated color in the literature. The accents of color seem to behave as a rebellion against English Victorian repression. Similar to Alice’s childhood whims of fantasy, the artist has invited us to view these images with a new perspective. Although the original illustrations were composed with no color, their beauty and fantasy powerfully reigns. The surreal images are representations of the duality between fantasy and reality in this beloved children’s classic. You can find all Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland-inspired prints in their Etsy shop.
