𝘚𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰.
Elle swallowed. "You think?"
Jinx flicked her tail. 𝘠𝘦𝘴, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘯'𝘵.
That one landed differently.
Elle didn't answer, because deep down—she already knew.

𝘚𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰.
Elle swallowed. "You think?"
Jinx flicked her tail. 𝘠𝘦𝘴, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘯'𝘵.
That one landed differently.
Elle didn't answer, because deep down—she already knew.
The house felt quieter after.
Too quiet.
Jinx reappeared almost instantly.
"𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘭𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘬𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘩𝘦𝘳."
Elle dropped onto her bed, staring at the ceiling. "Shut up."
Scottie stood, grabbing her bag a little too quickly. "We got a lot done, so.. that's good."
"Yeah."
Another pause. Shorter this time. Sharper.
Scottie hesitated at the door. "I'll see you tomorrow. At school."
Elle nodded. "Yeah."
Scottie gave her a small, soft smile—and then she was gone.
"I should probably go," Scottie said suddenly, sitting up straight. "It's getting late."
The moment snapped like a thread pulled too tight.
"Oh," Elle said, trying to sound normal, "right."
Elle could feel it—that strange pull, like gravity had shifted just slightly between them. Scottie's gaze flicked to her lips for half a second before snapping back up.
Elle's heart started to race.
"Scottie—" Elle found herself leaning forward, looking into those brown eyes.
Scottie tilted her head. "You okay?"
"Yeah—yeah, just.. thinking."
Scottie hummed, unconvinced but letting it go.
Another pause.
Closer now.
At some point, Jinx appeared in the doorway.
𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘦𝘸, she said, voice dry as ever.
Elle stiffened slightly.
𝘋𝘰 𝘵𝘳𝘺 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧.
"Go away," Elle thought back quickly.
𝘎𝘭𝘢𝘥𝘭𝘺. 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘱𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘵𝘰 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩.
Time blurred after that. Most of the project got done, but neither of them rushed to pack up. They ended up sitting closer than where they started, shoulders almost brushing, talking about nothing and everything at the same time.
Scottie rested an elbow on her knee, staring at the floor. "You ever feel like people already decided who you are before you even talk?"
Elle let out a quiet breath. "All the time."
"Yeah," Scottie said. "Same."
Elle glanced up at that, surprised.
At one point, Scottie glanced up from her paper and said, "You're not what I thought you'd be like."
Elle raised a brow. "What, weird?"
Scottie smirked. "I mean… yeah. But not in a bad way."
Elle huffed a laugh. "Wow. Thanks."
"I'm serious," Scottie said, softer now. "You're just.. different."
They moved to Elle's room after that, spreading papers across the floor. The project started out slow, stiff—but it didn't stay that way.
Scottie was smarter than Elle expected. Not just in a "gets good grades" way, but quick & funny in this dry, offhand way that kept catching her off guard.
Scottie nodded like she understood more than Elle thought she would. "My mom died when I was little."
The words landed softly, but stayed there.
Elle shifted awkwardly, unsure of what to say. "I'm sorry."
Scottie shrugged, but not in a careless way. "It's okay. I don't really remember her much."
"It's a lot," Elle said.
"Mine's big too but—yours just feels lived in," Scottie shrugged. "It's just me & dad, if you don't count the staff keeping it spotless.."
Elle paused. "Same—not the staff, but my dad does most stuff.. cooking, cleaning," she hesitated. "Mom's around… just works a lot."
The Vatore-Goth house was quieter than usual when they got there.
Elle dropped her bag by the stairs. "We can work in my room or the kitchen. Or wherever, I guess."
Scottie stepped inside slowly, taking it in—not judgemental, just.. noticing. "Your house is nice."
Instead, Scottie just shrugged. "You wanna just come over to yours or mine after school? Get it done?"
Elle blinked. "…Mine's fine."
"Just Elle," She replied, a little flat.
Scottie smiled, easy. "Looks like we're partners."
"Yeah. Looks like it."
There was a pause. Elle expected.. something. A look, maybe. Dismissal. The subtle kind of disinterest she'd come to expect from girls like her.
Behind her, someone said, "You're Ellaway, right?"
Elle turned back.
Scottie Pepper stood there like she belonged in a different world—golden hair pulled up into a perfect ponytail, skin sun-kissed even under fluorescent lights, a casual confidence that made people look twice without realizing it.
