The Only Ones - Live In Chicago 1979

A cool surprise recently released by the Alona’s Dream Label — 40 minutes worth of absolutely scorching live Only Ones from back in ‘79. I love this band’s studio records, but my favorite out of all their output is probably the BBC Recordings compilation. Live In Chicago 1979 is definitely in that stripped-down/revved-up mode. Even though the band is playing to just a couple dozen (very enthusiastic) fans, they sound as though they’re blasting away in an arena, with John Perry’s white-hot lead guitar leading the way. Necessary!

Savage Beliefs were a 1980s Chicago punk band that shared member with Big Black.  Frankly, one of my favorite things about music in the last several years is the explosion in reissues, or “issues” of long-lost bands.  I’d never heard of Savage Beliefs (look at those shorts) during the 1980s. 

Frankly their sound sounds like a combo of surf, punk and post-punk (think of Mission of Burma).  Actually, they sound like they were doing Parquet Courts sound about 20 years before (listen to “Zulu Time”).

Classic 1960s harmonies and pop.  This is a band from the 1960s that I’m sure never saw their fair share of the light back in their day.  The harmonies are a bit reminiscent of The Kingston Trio or Simon and Garfunkel.  This is also on Alona’s Dream Records. 

What two releases are more different than The Wombats and Savage Beliefs?

Listen/purchase: Big Big Sky: A Recorded History of Savage Beliefs by SAVAGE BELIEFS 

Recorded between 1983 and 1984, this album collects the entire recorded output of Chicago punk legends Savage Beliefs. The A side comprises their long out-of-print 7” vinyl EP from 1983 - The Moral Efficiency Of Savage Beliefs. The B side includes the group’s two 1984 sessions, both of which were recorded by Iain Burgess. The first session from ’84 was recorded for the score of Savage Beliefs, The Movie and has remained unreleased until now. The tracks from the second session in ’84 appeared on the classic hardcore WNUR Middle of America compilation. All songs were transferred from the original master tapes by Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in Chicago in June 2015.
