Where is the way out? I don't know where in the Underground I am...
Down here again.
Alone again.
How many times does this make it?
I’m so tired. It feels like I haven’t slept in years.
Not again... What happened this time?
“well, there’s the lab in the hotlands, perhaps teh scientist would be willing to go through theories with us? i mean, i’m sure anyone to listen is someone to talk to when it comes to science…”
“Or crappy cartoons. are you seriously suggesting taking him to alphys for answers? the only answers there is how merging wiht others saves you from dust.” that last remark made Frisk kinda flinch, but they played it off as if a bug had buzzed near their ear.
“Doctor Alphys?” David asked, tilting his head slightly. He was silent for a few moments before nodding, “We could. She’s the Royal Scientist for a reason, right? She might have some ideas... though as far as Asgore may be in gathering all the souls, she might feel there’s no need for another way.”
He shook his head, “I’m sorry, I don’t mean to sound so negative. I’ve just... tried thinking about different ways out for a while. I’ve gone through every book I could find in the Snowdin library, and I couldn’t find anything.”
They were chasing after a dog monster? David couldn’t help but chuckle quietly behind his hand. He’d have probably done the same, even though he hadn’t seen said dog monster run past. Well, if it wanted to be found, it would pop its head up sooner or later.
When they finally noticed him, he gave a small wave and a smile. “Hi, um, I’m David. Nice to meet you both.”
Addie tugged on their friend’s sleeve, signing. “Addie says it’s nice to meet you, too. They don’t talk, if you haven’t guessed.” Orange explained, smiling back. Chara just rolled their eyes, snorting softly.
David nodded slowly. He sort of figured that at the beginning, but better safe than sorry, he supposed. He glanced around. Still no sign of that dog monster anywhere, but it could have easily darted away while they were distracted.
“So...” he said, “since you look human... I’m going to guess that you’re both some of the, um, the souls that Chara was talking about?”
“this place has lost hope. the only hope left is the one our souls provide, really. it’s easy to blame them, but it’s still not right. frankly, i bet i’d be doing the same if i was in their shoes… maybe. i don’t know. all i do know is that things down here have been rough,” she laughed slightly. “although, i suppose running works just as well when avoiding a fight.”
David rubbed his neck. “I get the part about the souls. I just…” he shook his head, “I’m not used to being hunted or running for my life. Playground bullies are one thing, these monsters play for keeps. …but I don’t wanna hurt them either, I just want to be left alone.”
“i hear what you mean though. i guess i’m just determined enough to see the best to look past that and think for another way for them to get out of here.”
“I hope there is another way.” David replied with a nod, “I mean... I talk pretty badly about a lot of them, but I’ve made a few friends down here. I don’t want them to be stuck here forever like they have been.”
He folded his arms, thinking, “I wish there was a way to study the barrier, see what works and what doesn’t. But the only place I know where it is is in Asgore’s throne room...”
The demon let go of David’s hand. “Hold on.” They grumbled, flame-colored wings forming on their back. They took off, speeding forward until they caught the two, landing in front of them. And then Chara got knocked down due to the two not being able to stop in time and all three tumbled to the ground in a horrible knot.
Chara struggled, untangling themselves and standing. “Mind telling me what the hell you two were doing?” The child with a bow began signing quickly. “…Addie, I literally can’t comprehend what you’re saying when you move that fast.”
David stopped short as Chara took flight with wings that suddenly appeared on their back, his jaw hanging slightly as they did.
“That’s new.” he mumbled to himself.
With all three (well, four, counting Flowey) finally stopped, he was able to approach at a less urgent pace, coming up behind them as the one was apparently signing what was going on to Chara. David had never understood sign language, but he could tell something was happening and it might not have been good.
“Is something wrong?” he ventured.
The kid with the bandanna stood up, helping the other child up. “Okay, so, we saw a dog monster, we wanted to pet the dog monster, and then it ran off and we ran after it and we ended up here.” “…So you were running like hell to catch a dog.” “Yep. Oh, who’s this guy?” Seemed they’d noticed David.
The kid with the bow just waved, smiling. “This is Addie, you can call me Orange.” The bandanna kid smiled.

“Yeah, that’s why I came. That and mom’s here for comfort.” They sighed. “Though, it’s good to see you. It’s been a long time.” Chara offered a smile, then twitched, face going blank. And then there were loud crackling footsteps coming towards them. They slowly reached to their pocket, no doubt where their knife was, edging in front of David.
…And then two kids sprinted right past. “Wh- Wait, Addie, Orange, what the hell?!” They quickly gave chase, dragging David along with them.
Mom. The mention of Miss Toriel caused David to reflexively reach up and scratch the back of his neck. He hadn’t seen her in... well, forever. It certainly felt like forever. Then again, time was just flat-out WEIRD here. He grinned faintly as Chara spoke and smiled at him again, which turned into confusion, then surprise as the two children ran past, Chara dragging him along in pursuit.
“Th-they’re in a pretty big hurry...!” he exclaimed, trying his best to keep up.
“ah, that’s good i was a tad… worried there. you can do something for each of them and they don’t want to fight any longer after wards. the Aarons just want a flexing contest, for instance. then they flex themselves out of the room, leaving some gold behind too. or if you hug or encourage the Vulkins, the’ll leave you alone if you ask them, because they don’t even realize that they’re hurting us. i’m trying to get through blameless, so that hopefully Asgore can be talked to instead of…” Frisk just shook their head slightly, forcing a smile again. no matter how many times they tried, they’d never been able to avoid FIGHTing Asgore, and they hated it. best not to let David know they’ve done it before though. “next fight we come across i can show you what i mean. you jsut gotta figure out what they’re really after!”
David listened as Frisk listed off a few of the monsters. He’d already encountered most of them, but he hadn’t known how to counter their attacks. He usually didn’t give them time to even get one off. By the time they were ready, he was halfway down the corridor and not looking back. But this was good information to know. He would have to try it himself the next time he got into a situation, which he doubted would take long to do.
He flinched at Asgore’s name, instinctively rubbing at his chest. The way Frisk trailed off seemed to indicate something bad. David didn’t need it spelled out, it was pretty obvious. But he wasn’t surprised. Just about every human that ended up down here and made it all the way to Asgore ended up in a coffin.
Frisk might have been the only exception.
David smiled a little, going along with what Frisk was saying. “It’s hard to know what they want.” he replied, “A lot of them act like they wanna hurt me.”
The boy blinked at Chara’s reaction. What had been in the Lab that had-?
A dawning realization came over his face, and then he nodded a few times, quickly and quietly, as though to move along from that topic. So it had been only a few months. It felt like much, much longer than that. But the void had a tendency to do that sort of thing.
“So… it’s been that long, did… everything go down with the barrier?” he asked, “Is it open? Or is everyone still stuck?”
Seemed they had a silent agreement not to say a word of that mess to anyone. “Ah, nope, barrier’s still there. We’re working on it.” They replied. “But we’ve at least made progress. I mean, mom and dad know I’m ‘alive’ now.” They even did the finger quotes. “And dad revealed that to the whole underground which is why I’m currently hanging out here.” “They dragged me along with them.” Flowey rolled his eyes.
So everything was still more or less the same, aside from people knowing about Chara and Flowey. Status quo was still alive and kicking. David twisted his mouth in thought. Clearly, this wasn’t his particular universe, given the other souls that Chara had mentioned, which meant there was already someone who had a purple soul here.
He glanced over at them. “Well, the Ruins don’t have too many monsters roaming around. Less than most places.”

Send me a "♦" for the first word my muse thinks of when your muse is mentioned.
“i wouldn’t go that far… the loox reminded me of MIke Wazowski, and they’re the freakiest thing that i’ve really seen… although, i suppose there is that oddball up in the resort that’s… interesting with his facial abilities.” Frisk is totally talking about BurgerPants, but not unkindly. “oh but uh, talking about monsters uh… you’ve not made any… dust have you?”
“oh COME ON! there’s still resets if he did dust anyone, as he rightfully should, even if he is also ignorant of the puppeteer pulling his strings.”
David shook his head. In his time, or one of his times, he had seen quite a few more terrifying monsters. Undyne scared him the most, but her Royal Guards weren’t too far below her on the list. He’d never directly encountered the one called Knight Knight, but he was happy to give her a wide berth.
He made a face at the mention of dust and shook his head, “Uh-uh. I try to stay away from fights as much as I can. ...it doesn’t keep the monsters from trying to fight me, though. I just... run away.”
“Seeing as Paps learned his cooking from Undyne, i think i can go a bit longer without needing to eat that stuff…” friendly laugh. frankly, even though they never got burned, the house going up in flames STILL made them slightly uneasy after the cooking. maybe prepping in hotlands would help this time.
“I wonder how he acts in a fight situation… well, i’m sure there’ll be a vulkin that we find out with soon enough. let him take the wheel next fight, it’ll be interesting!”
“who would have thought that there’d be so much life hidden from the world here though? they don’t really teach about the war with monsters back on teh surface. not anymore, atleast. coming down here, it’s hard sometimes to recall thinking of monsters as just a scary story.”
David pushed his glasses back onto his nose and nodded slightly at the comment about cooking. He didn’t know much about the cuisine of the Underground, outside of Toriel’s cooking and the food served at the restaurant in the resort, so he had no idea what sort of food Undyne was even capable of preparing.
“They didn’t teach us anything about the war, at least at the school I went to.” he piped up, “The only thing that they told us was that we can’t ever go to Mount Ebott. They never said why, just... don’t do it. ...I don’t know, some of these monsters seem like they’re right out of those scary stories.”
David listened further, then shook his head. Clearly, he’d missed a lot. It didn’t really surprise him, considering how long he’d been trapped in the void. How long exactly he’d been gone was another matter altogether. And when this was was just as important as what had happened.
Time was a mess.
“Do you have any idea how long I’ve been gone?” he asked, “I mean… the void thing happened… I dunno, a little while after we ‘met’ in the Lab…”
“I’m not sure. I’d say about… Three, four months.” They shrugged. The demon paused at the mention of the scene in the True Lab. “Ah. Aha. Yeah. Let’s not talk about that.” No talking about the fact that Chara cried like a baby. Flowey gave a curious look, but didn’t pry.
