“to see him beat Kelly… and see him splashing the water and seeing him so happy… it was definitely the most emotional contest for him. I’d never seen him so happy. Cause I know… he loved to win and he needed that…he was so happy… I’d never seen him so happy, too. He said to me on the phone, “I really did it! Can you believe I can still do it?” Well, of course. He had been doubting himself for a long time. That was my favourite win by far in the nine years I was with him. It meant the world to him.”

"OK, OK — this shot I love. This was when Andy was gonna win, I believe his third World Title at Sunset. So about 2003 or 2004. Andy had pretty much sealed it up with his winning wave, and look at Bruce — clapping him on! And this is when I just went, “Wow, Bruce is so excited about his brother winning.” And look at the hands, and some of the Kauai boys around him. This is just one of those photojournalism moments that I’m just super proud of. And look, that could be — yeah that is — that’s Sion, with his arm in front of his face. But that’s brotherly love right there, Bruce was very happy for his brother at that point, and it was coming across, just cheering. I mean, I was just blown away when I saw him cheering because they’ve always been very, very…you know the media would play up their sibling rivalry. But this was just love. What would you change about your life?

"Not a thing. Everything’s a learning curve. There’s a couple of things (laughs) I’d like to take back, but fuck, I wouldn’t be who I am or where I am today. You gotta go in the mud sometimes to figure out who you are. I’ve had my fair share of hills and valleys, but life’s been radical and exciting. Stuff that kings would die to do.”
