I saw you in a dream — Honey Moon
I am studying abroad again! Continent that I’ve never been to before. I’ve been here one month and I have two more left.
Also I broke up with my boyfriend right before coming here. It was long distance after I went home from studying abroad before and he wasn’t communicating well. So I broke up with him. It really hurt but I feel a lot better now.
I’ve written a lot of poetry recently and I want to publish a book of it with some of the photos I’ve taken. I don’t know if it’s any good though. It’s one of those things where I am scared of sharing it but I also really want to.
I met a guy here about a week ago and we’ve gone on a couple dates. :) It’s weird because I’m still getting over my ex a little and I’m only going to be here a few months longer. But he’s really kind and cute. I rode on his motorcycle and he’s very into dancing and nature and he’s very adventurous. Like he’s invited me paragliding with his friends. And he knows all sorts of cool places in the mountains. And I danced with him at a club the other day and he taught me the steps really well in a way that I actually understand! I think he really likes me. We kissed the other day and we’ve been texting a lot and I’m having a really good time!
wish my life was like a 90’s movie where all my friends work in record stores and bookshops and coffee shops and we see really cool bands in small little clubs and get breakfast together and like hang out on roofs and shit
I studied abroad last semester and I’ve been back now for about a month. I had a really amazing time! I made a lot of friends both from my program and in the country, and the language immersion was a really invaluable experience. Now I have about another month here in the US before I will study abroad again this spring. It’s going to be in a different country—and a completely different region than I’ve ever been before—but the same language.
I’m really excited, but also nervous. There’s only a few other students going with me. I’m going to stay with a host family (as opposed to in a dorm). And I studied with my best friend last time, so I knew that I wouldn’t be lonely or anything. So yeah, this could be more challenging.
Additionally, I started dating someone during my semester abroad and we’ve continued to date. We text everyday and we’ve called a few times, and he has started to look at flights to come and visit me. I’ve never liked anyone as much as I like him. The long distance and the language barrier is a challenge but I’m having a really great time with him and I’m excited to see where this goes!
“I’ll take care of you / if you ask me to / in a year or two”
“I wouldn’t ask you to care of me”
“You held me the whole way through / when I couldn’t say the words like you / I was scared indigo, but I wanted to / I was scared indigo, but I wanted to / and I don’t wanna talk about anything”
“I didn’t know if you’d care if I came back / I have a lot of regrets about that”
“You are somebody’s baby / some mother held you near / no, it’s not important / they’re just pretty words my dear”
“Take Care” Beach House; “I Wouldn’t Ask You” Clairo; “Anything” Adrianne Lenker; “This Is Me Trying” Taylor Swift; “Chelsea” Phoebe Bridgers
So I’m studying abroad and I’ve lowkey started dating someone! I went out drinking the other day with some friends and a guy I met here, and the guy brought two of his friends. And one of them was really cute and we flirted for a while and then he danced with me and kissed me! And we left the bar together and he walked me home and we made out a lot.
Then today I went on a museum date with him and he taught me a lot about the art there. We went on a walk by the river and kissed for a while on a bench. And we held hands a lot. And then we got some pastries together. It was so much fun and I like him a lot.
He’s from here and I’m trying to learn the language. I’ve been learning for years but I’m really immersed in it now, and it’s so fun to talk to him. He’s a painter and he’s really smart and funny. And so hot. I’m really happy :)
Oops he’s 29… gotta decide if I care. I thought he was around 25. Since the museum date we’ve gone out a few more times and I really like him :)

He texted me last week and he was really present in our conversation for a while. He shared a bunch of random things that are going on in his life right now, and I gave him updates on my travels and how I’m spending my days. It felt really good.
He mentioned that he’s reading The Handmaid’s Tale (a book that I read and we discussed two years ago) and he told me that he just got to the specific passage that I told him about years ago. I was struck by how well he remembered that old conversation.
Anyways, that only lasted for a few hours, but we’re both busy and in completely different time zones, so that’s not a big deal to me. So, this happened on Thursday. I texted him the next day—Friday—and he didn’t respond. And then I texted him again on Saturday night. Still no response. This new app that we’re using has read receipts, and he hasn’t read the messages.
I feel really embarrassed about my last few messages. Basically, I got drunk for the first time on Saturday, and I drunk texted him about how it felt. I don’t know why, it just felt like a good idea at the time, like it’d be interesting and funny and provoke a response. But he hasn’t responded and I just feel worse and worse about it everyday. And while technically he “hasn’t read the messages in the app” I’m sure he saw the notification and has read the messages outside of the app. Ugh.
I’m worried that he’ll think I’m being irresponsible or unsafe. His best friend struggles with alcohol addiction and has been on a bumpy journey to recovery for years. I don’t want him to think that I’m acting stupid. Logically, I know that he wouldn’t think that or say anything to that effect, but I still feel this way. Like, he has encouraged me to drink before, and he enjoys drinking, so why would he be upset now that I have gotten drunk? That’s not such a big deal. Maybe I’m projecting.
I don’t know, I just wanted to share that moment with him, and I feel rejected.
“I believe you’d be so cold to leave me hanging all day long / You prickly frost, you courage lost / But I could never be so mad to shake you by the shoulders screaming / You coward! You hummingbird! / You coward! You hummingbird! /
I screamed out, How’d it get this bad? / And the thunder answered back / If you know not what you lack / Then you must un-turn your back /
Your inside is overcast / You are tethered to your past / And it must feel like fucking hell / To be a patchwork of yourself /
A bunch of scraps thrown and sewn around your bones / And though you’re alone, it’s holding you too tightly /
But who are you? From where do you come? What do you believe in? And who do you love?”

“I met you in November for a weekend / I loved you by December like a fool / You left me for a friend over the summer / I never had a chance to play it cool / I read all of the books you recommended / I listened to your friend’s band all the time”
“I misread every warning as an answer / To questions I was too afraid to know”
“You call me while I’m backstage with a fever / You tell me how I’m always on your mind / I crush your paperback to the receiver / I learned that trick from a cartoon kid / It’s always something I wanted to try”
“I still see you as some kind of reassurance / That someday I’ll be understood”

Okay, about A:
The last time I talked to him on the phone was in the end of May. I texted him a few times in June—no response. I called him once in July—no response. I texted him again in early August—no response. I thought maybe he had died or something horrible had happened to him. It really hurt me that he didn’t respond and I still don’t understand why it happened.
I texted him about two weeks before leaving for my studying abroad trip, cause I felt very distraught and I wanted him to know that I was leaving the country and that he had hurt me. And then he finally responded two weeks later, on the day that I left. 🙄 So I obviously had no time to respond to him and it kind of just made my travel day more stressful and painful, and it felt very selfish to me. Feels like maybe he was scared to talk to me or for me to respond.
Here’s an excerpt of what he said: “I am very sorry for hurting you and putting you in positions where you feel embarrassed to communicate. I am a bad friend. I have badly managed my life in recent years and frequently feel overwhelmed and struggle to not withdraw. I’m not telling you anything you don’t know, I guess. Please, travel safely” :(
So, he apologized and everything, but that’s still not enough for me. I mean, he dropped off the face of the earth for months without any notice or explanation. And my gut instinct was to be like “no you’re a great friend <3 :( ” but that just isn’t true. He has been a good friend to me, but he has also been a bad friend to me.
Anyways, about a week and a half ago, I told him that I forgive him, but I can’t talk to him like we used to anymore because I can’t handle going through that again. Then I updated him about my travels, and asked him a few questions about how he’s doing. No response.
I texted him again earlier this week, letting him know that my phone number changed. And I also asked him how he was doing and updated him on my life again. And I said “I feel like I’m pestering you and I don’t know what to say or do to get you to respond. And it sucks to have no control over the situation”
And he responded like an hour later. He downloaded a different texting app for me so that we could talk more easily. And then we had like an hour long text conversation about my study abroad experience. But it was so weird because he like ignored all of my questions about how he’s doing? Or like barely answered them. :/ And it was really late where I am so I had to end the convo. Since then I’ve texted him a few times but he’s not been good about responding, like usual.
I just don’t know what the fuck is going on anymore. For a moment, it seemed like maybe we could talk through it and come out on the other side, but he just seems unwilling to put in the effort now to do that. Like, I know there’s a big time difference between us right now, but he’s left me on read for two days. (Over the weekend! When he doesn’t have school or work!) Where is the effort? I don’t need a lot, but I need to see an attempt at communication. An attempt to make things right. I’ve been able to have several phone and zoom calls with other friends and family from back home, let alone casual text conversations. It’s not that hard to keep in touch. But it’s becoming harder and harder to be his friend.
Hey, it’s been a while.
I’m studying abroad in Europe! I’ve been here for two weeks now, and I’ll be here for the rest of the semester. My best friend is also in the program, and I’m starting to make friends with the other students, both in my program and native to the country. The classes are challenging, and so is the language immersion, but it’s extremely rewarding. And the city I live in is very walkable, so I’ve been exploring a lot!
I have my own dorm room—something I’ve never experienced before, despite this being my third year of university. The food is amazing. I’ve gotten several scholarships, and I’ve been spending the money on good food, new clothes, and souvenirs for family and friends.
Things are going really well. I feel happier and more independent than I have in a long time. Maybe my whole life? It feels like all of my needs are being met. Like I’m meeting all of my needs.
My relationship to food has improved. I feel more content with my body. I feel like I’m getting stronger from all this walking. I feel socially satisfied. The days feel appropriately long. I’ve been waking up earlier. Going out more (obviously following covid guidelines + I’m fully vaccinated). Spending less time on my phone. I feel like I’m learning more about who I am and what I want from life.
I don’t know, life just feels like life again.
some excerpts from heather havrilesky/ask polly's books and columns that snap me out of uselessly longing and obsessing over romantic love:
'let's try this: if i told you that you would never, ever fall in love again, what kind of plan would you make to ensure your own happiness moving forward? what would you work toward? what would you do more of?'
'you need to begin by painting a picture that doesn't include love. you need to stop making room in your life for someone else's love and start making room for yourself instead. [...] when you can imagine a beautiful life even in the absence of romantic love, finding love or losing it again won't seem nearly as scary.'
'you must break this fixation on love as the cure all to all of your ills. if you found love right now, you would run it straight to the ground in seconds. you need an outward focus that has nothing to do with guys.'
'it's time to forget about being lovable. and in fact, it's time to forsake someone else's idea of what gives you a spark or no spark. block the "other" from this picture. no more audience.'
'the central challenge in your life is not finding people who will support you and love you. the central challenge in your life is you finding a way to give yourself support and love. you need to shift your concentration away from this imaginary hole in your life, and shift it towards bigger projects that will feed and sustain you over the course of a lifetime.'
