Text from my Instagram post: Romanticizing Nazis and the Holocaust in a novel? What happened? The writer Skyler L. (on Instagram as (@)ofwritersandreaders ) promotes her „Holocaust historical fiction“ debut novel (not yet published) and has gotten a lot of critique, in hundreds of comments. Many of these have been deleted since. Here is what has been criticised: 1. In the novel, there is a romance between a SS Nazi and a Jewish woman. Which, as you can guess is not only extremely unrealistic, but also romanticizes a terrifying imbalance of power. 2. The writer wants to give that SS Nazi a redemption arc, which is also extremely unrealistic and inappropiate, given the fact that member of the SS were dedicated supporters of H!tler and did horrible crimes because they intentionally chose to join the SS (not because they were forced to do this). 3. The writer chose to promote her book like a dark romance, including mood boards which seem to romanticize the Holocaust, Nazis, concentration camps and more. 4. Several people pointed out a couple of research mistakes which have already come to light, though the novel has not been published yet. But these mistakes can lead to the conclusion that the writer’s research work is rather poor. Among the many people who criticised a statement of the writer were Jewish descendants of Holocaust survivors, other Jewish people, also Austrians and Germans. The statement is currently pinned to the profile of the writer, but all comments have been deleted and it cannot be commented atm. It seems this debut writer isn’t able to take criticism, otherwise she wouldn’t have deleted all those critical comments. Some people suggested that she could completely change the setting, away from this historical one, for instance she could write a dystopia or (grim) dark fantasy. Imho, her statement reads as if she hasn’t understand the main points of critique which so many people have written her. This writer could heavily damage her career before it even has started, if she publishes this novel. I was reminded of the controversies about debut authors Milo Winter and Cait Corrain who both seriously damaged their careers for other reasons.

Looking for book recs, thrillers with influencers

Recently, I have read some thrillers (or other genres) with characters who are influencers (not necessarily as main characters), and I would love to read more, because I have a bit of a hyperfixation on the topic.

With Wild and Full of Marvels: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Folklore and Fairy Tales, our authors and artists bring our perspective as queer adults in the 21st century to the stories, some ancient, some modern, that meant the most to us when we were young. Each creator selected a folktale, fairy tale, myth, or legend that had personal significance for them, then reimagined these personal touch-stones as we wish they could be: stories that uphold our cultures, stories that impart the lessons and morals we wish to impart, stories that drive home the cautions we wish we’d received, stories in which people like us are the heroes held forth for emulation. We’ve transformed these stories to be more inclusive, more personal, more understanding of others, and—of course!—much more queer.

Book Review

„Pagan Portals: Hecate – Goddess of Magick and Witchcraft“ by Irisanya Moon

I have read several books about Hecate, and in my eyes, this book is an excellent starting point if you are interested in this goddess from a modern pagan perspective and are not yet familiar with her.

The author traces back the historical origins of the goddess, her myths, the way she was depicted and how she was worshipped. Throughout the book, there are several quotes from translated ancient texts, often with a short summary by the author.

There are also several exercises, for instance a trance to meet Hecate or even aspecting the goddess (which is rather a practice for advanced practitioners, as Irisanya Moon points out). Personally, I would have left out this advanced practice, as this is rather a beginner’s book, but opinions may vary on this matter.

There are also chapters about necromancy (with an exercise to communicate with a spirit or ghost) and how witchcraft and magick were related to Hecate in ancient times.

Another chapter focuses on the many epithets of this goddess, animals, plants and symbols which are associated with her.

In the last chapter, there are suggestions about how to cultivate a spiritual relationship with Hecate.

As in all the Pagan Portals books I have read so far, there are also extensive resources, endnotes and a bibliography listed for further reading.

In my eyes, the book is easy to read for general audiences, this is not a high-brow academic text with a lot of technical (or historical) terms.

Over on Instagram, an aspiring writer wants to write her first novel set in Nazi Germany, with a romance about a Nazi and a Jewish woman. Several folks, including some Jewish people, Germans and Austrian commented that this is basically a romantization of the holocaust and a very bad idea for a novel.

The writer, Skyler L., then released a statement explaining that the romance is just a subplot. Instead her focus seems to be on giving a Nazi a redemption arc. (!) Again, several people commented how problematic this is. I wrote, "If you have a romance in this novel, with a literal Naz! and a Jewish woman, even if this is just a sub-plot – this is still very inappropiate and a horrible form of romanticizing the Naz!s. Why not write a sub-plot with a love story between two Jewish people, instead about a Nazi and a Jewish woman, or leave out the romance entirely?" If this writer still publishes that novel, I think she will damage her career before it has even started. And she wouldn't be the first writer to whom this happens. Think of Milo Winter or Cait Corrain, first time writers who seriously damaged their careers, because of other reasons. Sklyer L. has 12500 followers on Instagram and I guess several of them are going to support her blindly, no matter how bad and problematic her book is. :(

Update on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 More than 800 people had commented on her statement, most of them criticising her book project. Today, none of these comments can be seen anymore, I guess she has deleted them all. It is also not possible anymore to comment her statement. It seems like this debut author is unable to take criticism.

And she got several new followers - I guess Nazi apologists? Right wing folks or MAGAs who'd love to read such a horrible romance?

For fuck's sake, is there any platform for artists and fandom spaces left where there are no scammers? Got this message today on Deviantart: "I've gone through all your character designs. Genuinely impressed. Each one has presence. Each one has its own energy. I'm a comic and manga artist. And I can already see how these designs would move, fight, bleed, and breathe on a page. I want to bring them to life. Full comic. Full manga. Your designs, my panels. Interested? Let's talk. I'll share my work samples."

I bet that person wants to do AI-slop with my artworks. I told them no and blocked them. Besides, I don't do "character designs" as they phrased it. I draw or paint portraits (fan art and others).

I keep hearing that Gen Z is rejecting media which have been generated with AI, and also many young folks stepping away from constant doom scrolling/social media, or even putting away their cell phones for quite some time (because they have realized constant usage is not good for their well-being and mental health) and instead using flip phones - without social media apps, just for calling and texting. All of this gives me hope. Why hope, you might ask? I mean hope in the sense of that people don't let the big tech companies shove gen AI and all the social media stuff down their throats so to speak, and instead seek out other solutions which are better for them.

I would love love love to find somebody who speaks Finnish and is interested in discussing language contexts with me! Mostly I want to ask how some words or sayings translate to Finnish, that kind of thing. If I could throw in a few questions about cultural stuff that would be perfection!

This is by the way for fanfic purposes. I am already learning Turkish for this, and as much as it pains me I can NOT add Finnish on top of that…

In an extra to the TV series “The Vampire Lestat” called “After Dark”, they sit around this coffin which serves as a table. Actually, I think this would be quite a practical piece furniture, because you can use it as a table and storage space. Too bad I don’t have enough space in my living room for such a thing. If I did, I could also hide the skeletons from my closet. ;)

As a pagan who happens to be against gen. AI, I'd like to say, what a horrible insult to the muses from Greek mythology (and also muse-like entities from other cultures which may have other names).

It's also not an original name - but when has Meta ever come up with something truly original and creative?
