Paul begins this segment by discussing and defining hacktivism, incorporating an element that I have not previously considered: “the spectrum of hacktivism encompasses projects that are harmless pranks and interventions that operate on the border of legality”. It seems that, in our classroom setting, we were using the phrase in conjunction with ‘slacktivism’, which has a far more negative connotation. It’s important to distinguish the two, as they have different intentions, methods, and outcomes. 

Paul continues by bringing to attention the fact that corporations are everywhere and easily available online, and that artworks are not separate from them. In a context where, with only a few clicks, one can go from viewing original content to viewing the latest advertisement, art is constantly accompanied by an alternative message. Activist art, which includes hacktvism, often aims to point this coexistence out. Useful to this goal is the internet’s inherent ability to replicate and reproduce-- imitation is not just the sincerest form of flattery, but the quickest path to parody. Online spaces allow for both the creation of new contexts and the creation of recontextualization, and this can be seen in many forms of hacktivism, as Paul describes. Furthermore, the versatile means of digital production equate to doubly versatile means of distribution, together making artists’ work seemingly uncensorable. This distribution has created a new definition of public artwork, one that does not rely so heavily on physical site or space. By the end of this segment, Paul concludes that these art forms have created new means of conflict and engagement, ones based off of the works of our contemporaries but amplified by current technology.
