What is going on with the internet in Brazil: cable TV against Netflix and YouTube

As I was explaining to a friend of mine, who’s american, why our communication might have to be reduced due to new internet connection rules set by the providers in Brazil, I realized how big of an impact it would actually have in my life. After discussing it incisively, I decided to bring some important points here and share the news with the ones who haven’t heard of this yet.

Here’s the situation, Brazil has the 9th worst, yes WORST, internet connection in the world. Beside the slow speed, the internet connection is often unstable and overpriced. Most connections are through phone lines (land lines), optical fiber is not available in several parts of the country. Well, what about mobile internet connection? Slow? Check. Unstable? Check. Overpriced? Check. And there’s a plus. Limited. Mobile internet connection in Brazil is limited to a number of megabytes you buy for a period of time. If you exceed the limit, you loose connection. This was established about a year ago and the large number of complaints from consumers to the providers or to regulatory agencies didn’t work to reverse the situation. People were more and more relying on WiFi connection to guarantee their internet package would last through the month.

Now, the same internet providers want to apply this service rule home internet. Breaking laws created to protect the consumer and fair internet access.
