Demi felt a genuine smile come to her lips as Emilie accepted her apology and spoke the words of trust about her. She squeezed her hand back as she sat down on the couch with Emilie. After a moment she pressed her lips together nervously and looked down. They were speaking honestly so it was only fitting that Demetria continue with her feelings. âWhy do you believe in me the way you do?â She asked softly. âI am not strong like my brother, I am not ruthless⌠I-âŚâ Demetria looked down, clearly underestimating herself. âI am weaker than he is.â She had been told by many but most importantly her father berating her over the years that her compassion was not a strength, but a weakness.Â
âI did not lose faith in you, Emilie.â Demetria spoke honestly. âI lost faith in myself.âÂ
Watching her princess worry back and forth, with her self esteem crashing, it hurt Emilieâs heart. Demetria was softer, yes, but that was her strength. Her heart. âMy dearest Demetria, you are as different from your brother as day is from night. The sun is from the moon. And that...that is why I have such faith in you.â Emilie told her simply, giving the womanâs hand another tender squeeze. Demetria had had her self belief broken down from a young age. The King was sure that his eldest son was the strongest and that there was only one way for strength. Emilieâs father did not believe this and she was raised with different opinions on such things, while still remaining absolutely loyal to the royal family. âCompassion is and never will be, a weakness. There is blindness in cruelty, as there is weakness. The cruellest people are weak as they are not beloved. They must rule through fear. You, my princess, could rule because you are beloved.â
