Picture this, you are hot and sweaty after climbing for 20 minutes up a monolithic sand dune. You reach the top and you look back…what you see makes all that treacherous exercise worth it. The sun is setting behind another distant sand dune, radiating a palate of different reds, yellows, oranges and pinks. Whilst, down below you, laying there like a rough-cut diamond in the hot sand is a gorgeous desert lagoon. It’s center holds a number of cute hotel resorts whilst its outer edge is encircled by tropical green palm trees…
Huacachina is one of those hidden treasures, off the beaten track and a secret gem. Located in the Ica region, in Peru’s south-west, this little province is built around a tiny natural lake in the desert. Dubbed the “Oasis of America”, it is home to many boutique resorts, with sand boarding and buggy rides on the sand dunes a common drawing factor for those adventure-loving tourists.
There is a legend that surrounds Huacachina stating the lagoon was formed when a stunning, native princess was taken at her bathing spot by a hunter. She ran away, leaving behind the pool of water she was bathing in, which legend has it, then turned into the lagoon and her flowing mantle turned into the surrounding dunes. To this very day it is rumored that she lives in the lagoon as a mermaid.
Once you arrive at one of America’s last natural Oasis’ you will be greeted by the rustic hotels, cute shopping spots and even a library edging the blue lagoon. Make a day-trip to one of the many surrounding Wineries or Bodegas. Huacachina is definitely on our Bucket List here at AM.
